DAYTON, Ohio - A young black teenager was shot and killed after attempting to rob a man with a concealed carry permit at the Dayton Mall in Dayton, Ohio.

The teen, 16-year-old Jawaad Jabbar, and his two friends were seeking to steal the man's new pair of "limited edition" Air Jordan shoes.

After Jabbar pulled a gun on his victim, he responded by pulling out his own and shooting the teenager in self-defense.

Jabbar died shortly after from the gunshot wound, no one else was injured.

His two friends fled the scene but were later arrested and are currently being held at a juvenile detention center while awaiting charges.

Here's one model of the shoe in question.

The Crime Prevention Research Center released a report in July of this year indicating 11.1 million Americans now hold concealed carry permits, only an estimated 4.6 million held such permits in 2007.
"Between 2007 and the preliminary estimates for 2013, murder rates have fallen from 5.6 to 4.4 per 100,000 – a 22 percent drop in the murder rate at the same time that the percentage of the adult population with permits soared by 130 percent. Overall violent crime also fell by 22 percent over that period of time."
A recent Pew Research poll showed Americans support gun rights at record levels, with blacks' views favoring gun ownership shifting 25 percentage points in two years time. In 2012, only %29 of blacks said gun ownership protected people from being crime victims, while 53% said they put people's safety at risk. Two years later in 2014, %54 now say gun ownership protects people from being crime victims, while only %41 say it puts people's safety at risk.
