30-year veteran police officer Gregory Thompson, 54, of the Walnut Creek, California police will only face at most a single year in prison for donning a ski-mask and beating a random innocent woman he suspected was a robber with a baseball bat. After another woman intervened to stop his beating, which occurred in Thompson's father's neighborhood outside his home which had recently been burglarized, the victim managed to escape, to which Thompson responded by smashing in her car window with his bat. The victim was later found cowering in a bush when police came, while Thompson was found sitting reclined in his car, with his mask, gloves, and bat hidden in his trunk. Thompson allegedly told the police who arrived he had been sleeping, though they didn't believe him as a firefighter told them he witnessed him removing his mask and gloves. Far from being a robber, the woman had in fact ran out of gas and was looking for help, but the officer thought she was a robber, so that apparently makes his beating her A-ok. Prosecutor Barry Grove said given Thompson's lack of a criminal history the sentence "may be on the heavy side." This despite the fact Thompson will be eligible to have his sentenced reduced to six months with good behavior, and he can apply to serve his entire sentence at home under electronic home detention. No doubt, if the situation was reversed and a random person donned a ski-mask and beat a cop on the street with a baseball bat they'd get 6-months home detention. Whoever said crime doesn't pay was never a cop. |
