Poll: Americans View Pot As Less Harmful To Health Than Tobacco, Alcohol, Or Sugar

by Paul Armentano, NORML Deputy Director

Americans believe that consuming cannabis poses less harm to health than does the consumption of tobacco, alcohol, or sugar, according to the findings of a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll released today.

Respondents were asked which of the four substances they believed to be "most harmful to a person's overall health." Most respondents said tobacco (49 percent), followed by alcohol (24 percent) and sugar (15 percent).

Only eight percent of those surveyed said that they believed that marijuana was most harmful to health.

The poll possesses a margin of error of +/- 3.10 percent.

Commenting on the poll results, NORML Deputy Director Paul Armentano said: "These results once again reaffirm that an overwhelming majority of the American public understands that any potential risks associated with the use or abuse of cannabis are relatively minor to those associated with many other legal and regulated substances. Criminalizing cannabis and those who consume it responsibly is a disproportionate public policy response to what is, at worst, a public health issue but not a criminal justice concern."

Under federal law, marijuana is classified as a schedule I controlled substance, meaning that its alleged harms are equal to those of heroin.

74204 It is not. When I quit smoking pot, my lungs felt much better. I still smoke tobacco. Weed is the lesser of the evils though. The combination of weed and tobacco, may be why I have had issues. Alcohol is the most destructive force. It kills more people than all other drugs combined. I can't believe the stupid destructive things I used to do while drinking. Can't say that about weed. If you quit weed there is no withdrawal, unlike everything else. I have done everything else too. Just not to the point of addiction. I still laugh at, one hit and your addicted for life. Crack was the shortest experimentation I ever had. That drug is not fun at all. Truth in drug counseling would go a long way to healing. Lies about drugs only push people away. They think we are idiots.

Some people seem to be less affected by one or the other. Commercial tobacco leaves me sore in the chest and hacking out gunk within days. Other people I know can smoke seemingly non-stop and still function,. Some cig smokers I know are extremely fit athletes. Others still, cannot double down and smoke both without discomfort.

Make sure you're not smoking "fire-safe" cigs. A government mandate forced manufacturers to add rings of carpet glue to the cigarette paper supposedly to stop fires (of course, it's actually less safe as the cherry falls out easier):

You need to roll your own to get around it, though in some places they have stores that let you "roll your own" with their machines etc. I don't smoke myself but friends do and say FSC make them feel sick.
