Edward Snowden's E-Mail Provider Defied FBI Demands to Turn Over Crypto Keys, Documents Show

The U.S. government in July obtained a search warrant demanding that Edward Snowden’s e-mail provider, Lavabit, turn over the private SSL keys that protected all web traffic to the site, according to to newly unsealed documents.

The July 16 order came after Texas-based Lavabit refused to circumvent its own security systems to comply with earlier orders intended to monitor a particular Lavabit user’s metadata, defined as “information about each communication sent or received by the account, including the date and time of the communication, the method of communication, and the source and destination of the communication.”

Good God, If I were worked for the government, I'd delete this article immediately.

perhaps, someone can define: "metadata," for the rest of us?

i have lots of books on metaphysics, is metadata similar?

anyhow, this article causes doublethink / triplethink - the reason i would have deleted it hours ago.

7147 "Metadata" is data that controls, defines or describes other data.

In the case of a phone call, the call itself--the voice--is the "payload" data. In that case, the metadata is the non-voice information about the call that makes it possible for the call to be carried. Such things as the number originating, the number dialed, the IP addresses of the phones, the length of the call, the cell towers that connected to the two phones (if they were cell phones), and such.

Of course, I personally think this is nonsense: I think the NSA is recording the voice, too. For all calls. If so, what they are doing is "admitting to a lesser crime". That is, "You don't have anything to worry about, because we didn't actually listen to the call. All we did was record some metadata about the call."

NSA has been "admitting to a lesser crime" a LOT. In fact, you might call it "serial" admitting to a lesser crime. First, they were "recording only persons for which they had a FISA warrant". When that was proven a lie, then they said that, "Yes, we recorded some people who weren't targets of a FISA warrent, but only metadata, and for people 'closely related' to those for which we had a FISA warrant." Then we found out about the Prism program, and they said, "All right, we were recording everyone's calls through Verizon, but only the metatdata for those calls." Now we find out that they're recording off of the internet backbone, which means EVERY call, no matter what provider. Get it?
