Radley Balko on The Rise of The Warrior Cop

Over the years, the lines between military soldiers and police have become more and more blurred. The Department of Homeland Security has provided local law enforcement agencies across the country with military-grade weaponry such as armor, tanks and rockets, and now many are questioning whether or not militarizing local police department is necessary or excessive. The author of Rise of the Warrior Cop, Radley Balko, joins us with more on how the cop has transitioned from serving and protecting to a warrior.

75145 It seems to me that the term "warrior" in the title of the book is very misleading. The dictionary definition of "warrior" is "a brave or experienced soldier or fighter" - which hardly can be applied to the cops who openly proclaim that their safety is #1 priority, that returning safe to their family every night is their most important daily mission, and who indiscriminately kill anybody who they feel is threatening it. We hear this explanation, "the officer was afraid for his safety" in probably 90% of all police shootings, be it a child (Derek Lopez), an old deaf man ( John Williams in SF), a small dog (lots), or mother with her child in her hands (Tarika Wilson). I think much more adequate term would be "The rise of armed and licensed to kill coward"
