Who Could Possibly Be Safe When Police Are Around?

by Will Grigg

According to the Arkansas Court of Appeals, police were entitled to arrest, taze, and beat a teenager for the supposed crime of walking with his mother on a street in front of their own home. A police officer accosted the young man when he saw him approaching a woman who was walking a dog. It was quickly established that the woman was his mother.

In a February 20 decision, the court pointed out that the juvenile, known only by the initials “R.R.,” was “tasered several times, removed from the backseat [of a police vehicle], thrown to the ground, tasered again, kicked, handcuffed, and arrested.”

All of this was done to the innocent youngster despite the fact that he hadn’t committed an offense except for “refusing to submit to arrest.” His resistance consisted of refusing to allow police to handcuff him.

The trial court in the case also acknowledged that the victim was “a fine young man, an excellent student, and active in sports, clubs and church activities.”  The trial court ordered the victim of the unwarranted police attack to serve one day in detention.

We’re told that police patrols keep our streets safe – yet the innocent have no protection against street violence committed by the police.

75145 I'm sorry, but this is absolutely not what the court of appeals says. Lower court has found that indeed the defendant resisted arrest, even if the arrest was unlawful (which is another subject entirely, possibly matter of separate lawsuit; quite possibly, the arrest was _not_ unlawful - we simply don't know). The appeal is denied on pure technicality, and the only thing it signifies is that the attorney representing the defendant is not professional.

75120 Enept cops have nothing better to do than start up something with a mother and son out walking their dog!!!! Those cops are in the wrong line of work and don't even qualify to have the IQ to hold that position as a public servant,,,, oh yeah iforgot there is no IQ qualification to be a cop. This shows a need for one!!!!!

75120 Update. County officer settled for 225,000 to the family and even admitted to lying under oath at previous trials, on police reports, and about taser data telling the father there was none, and his supervisor said the same thing. Go figure. Trooper changed his testimony too. It says a lot about the "police profession" inpopecounty , city ofdover and state troopers in Arkansas.
