Jerrie Brathwaite was not in her car when Washington, D.C. police seized it in January 2012. She had lent her 2000 Nissan Maxima to a friend, and that friend was pulled over, searched, and found to be in possession of drugs. A year later, Braithwaite—who has never been charged with a crime—still doesn’t have her car back, and no one from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) will return her calls.

Pretty sleazy. The automobile was in no way connected to the possession. For that matter, does that mean if they caught someone in possession of some pot on the subway, they could seize the subway car? Can WE citizens do that too?
In fact, subway cars, busses, etc. are all used in commission of crimes, when robbers use them to rob people in them.
Where exactly does this warped logic stop? Does no one anymore remember the concept of "conflict of interest", where police departments depend on ILLEGALLY (per the constitution) confiscated goods to supplement thier own budget, and no limit on the amount (I mean traffic tickets have always been a little iffy here too, but at least no one is issuing one for 130,000 dollars, but they can seize that much if someone had it) is direct conflict of interest.
Someone ought to challenge this in court.

Sounds like a racketeering extortion scandal on the innocent who try to get their belonging back, but since it's already held, they can ignore all calls and sell the property anyways and make the money they make by not answering telephone calls from those trying to get their property back. Makes perfect sense to me why they won;t answer, they make more money for not answering and stealing you property. The police have shown us that they are becoming the crooks, by doing the things that they are getting caught doing!
