The history of colonial America is replete with incidents of abominable abuse of power by agents of the Crown. One of the most effective means of oppressing the colonies was through writs of assistance, commonly known as general warrants, which gave British officials carte blanche arbitrarily to invade private homes and businesses in search of contraband and to seize property with absolute impunity.
