Do bans on texting while driving actually increase accidents?

By Andrew Adams

Of course, but they also increase revenue, therefor more people have to die. Same goes for the shortening of yellow lights to only 3 seconds from 5. See my article, "The Government Would Rather You Die If It Nets More Revenue" - Chris, InfoLibSALT LAKE CITY It's perplexing for both police and lawmakers throughout the U.S.: They want to do something about the danger of texting while driving, a major road hazard, but banning the practice seems to make it even more dangerous.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that 3 of every 4 states that have enacted a ban on texting while driving have seen crashes actually go up rather than down.

It's hard to pin down exactly why this is the case, but experts believe it is a result of people trying to avoid getting caught in states with stiff penalties. Folks trying to keep their phones out of view will often hold the phone much lower, below the wheel perhaps, in order to keep it out of view. That means the driver's eyes are looking down and away from the road.

108207 Wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that half the car fleet is on last miles now. Or would it ? Looking at triple A stats half the car fleet is 11 + years old with well over 100 k miles. When you are broke , tires , brakes , steering , suspension etc etc etc all get pushed off on the hope n change plans. Hope I can change cars afore this rolling turd kills someone , well at least kills someone I give a crap about .

Come on out to Okietard land , you will see multiple cars , that look or sound like they were the last car rolling at demolition derby. Have personally seen at least five tire blowouts in the last two months. I don't drive much at all either. There is no inspection out here , mostly cause there would be no room in the prisons or car storage for offenders . People who can't afford tires ,belts, shocks, brake pads, windshields, exhausts ,shocks , struts, cv joints , water pumps or what have you. Sure can't afford a fine or impound fee , so the cells would be full in a day for failure to pay.

70178 i can see how that could be. people are still obviously texting, but now they are trying to obfuscate their illegal activity. now they are texting while looking at the floor, instead of at a higher angle where peripheral vision is still seeing the road.

these people can only learn how to stop being idiots. no law will stop them.

an improvement of the technology will save lives. (the devices and the cars too.)

69168 absolutely agree with previous improvement of the technology will save lives, not foolish predictable behaviors!

68255 I can't understand why would anyone text rather then call, now that Bluetooth earpieces are common, and everyone can dial out and talk with zero involvement of hands. Maybe I'm too old, but I don't understand why is anybody texting at all - is pressing 8 tiny buttons more convenient than saying a word?

205209 Both calling and texting should be illegal while driving. Almost every time I see someone doing something stupid in a car, he or she is on a cell phone. Making it illegal definitely does make people think twice about doing it.

108207 About the same time jeebus was riding a velociraptor. We had a toy called the speak n spell . Say a word and the machine would repeat it. Is technology so effing fail that a speak to text message program could not be devised ?
I don't care really most of the clown people will be off road whether they like it or not in a few years. ) Just sort of cut down on the carnage in the mean time.
