U.S. sugar program pitting growers against soda and candy firms

Soda and candy makers seek to end a program that keeps U.S. sugar prices high by restricting imports. U.S. growers say that part of the farm bill, up for renewal, is vital.

WASHINGTON Makers of sodas, candy bars and other sweetened snacks are taking aim at a long-standing federal program that keeps sugar prices high by restricting imports.

Doing away with the sugar program would be a "huge boost" to candy makers and help them grow, said Robert Simpson Jr., president of Jelly Belly Candy Co., which has factories in Fairfield, Calif., Chicago and Thailand.

But the efforts of manufacturers are sparking intense opposition among lawmakers from sugar-growing states and the sugar lobby, as well as from some public health advocates.

97104 Ooooo! Ooooo! Free trade war.

Gonna be dicey: Them candy companies want that cheaper foreign sugar, but it's going to be really hard to get the restrictions on sugar import dropped without letting in a flood of that foreign candy.

And you KNOW the candy companies don't want that!.

7565 The sugar program is good in that it says at least 85% of sugar sold here must be produced in the US. So of course the repubbie-dominated US Chamber of Commerce & repubbie Club for Growth are against it. They like being able to rake in lucre by selling cheap Chinese shit & by offshoring jobs to get cheap labor.

As to the sugar-to-ethanol process, phooey. It's stupid to use a food item to make fuel, but big oil already has the patents on ethanol fuel. Gotta support them 1%er corporatists like good little fascists. - Hemp is the reasonable solution.

As to sugar per se - beware. The terrorists at monsanto, who are knowingly poisoning our food supply with genetically engineered (GE) corn, soy, canola, cotton (cotton seed oil), & alfalfa - plus animals fed GE diets - also make GE sugar beets. These crops contaminate organic crops & are thus destroying our only safe source of healthful food.

GE crops & products are scientifically linked to low sperm count, in utero deaths, birth defects, infertility in following generations, obesity, diabetes, pancreatitis, cancer, lupus, brain damage, cardiovascular problems, organ dysfunction & failure (liver, kidneys, lungs), toxin production by the gastrointestinal tract, random activation/deactivation of genes, production of proteins never seen before in the history of mankind, permanent DNA mutation (passed on to offspring), & DEATH. The ceos & bod members of monsanto, syngenta, et al. should be prosecuted for assault on public health, domestic terrorism, & treason.
