Pirate Bay Founder Peter Sunde Requests Pardon

by Enigmax

This man should be taking The Pirate Bay public like Facebook, instead he's going to be in a government cage because he came up with an innovative business model which the government arbitrarily proclaimed illegal. - ChrisAfter being found guilty of copyright offenses in connection with the operations of The Pirate Bay, site co-founder Peter Sunde should now be beginning an 8 month jail sentence in a Swedish prison. However, in a last-ditch attempt to maintain his freedom, Sunde has asked the Swedish government for clemency citing health and business concerns.

81161 I also think it's wrong to jail the Pirate Bay-guys, or any of the so-called 'Pirates' for that matter (terrible name, they are 'Filesharers'), that the laws forced upon the World by a corrupt US-government are Draconian and unjust, and that the CD and DVD are out-dated technologies that very few people actually want anymore, but let's be a bit realistic about it,
what did Sunde 'come up with' ?

Bit-torrent ? Nope .
Trackers ? Nope, and they aren't even really required .
Web-sites ? Nope .
Web-advertizing ? Nope .

There isn't anything 'innovative' about selling add-space on
a web-site with heavy traffic .
You also seem to be missing the point that a central part of
the argument for the Pirate Bay and/or bit-torrent not being 'illegal'
is that IT IS NOT BUSINESS !

Now if the Pirate Bay does in fact make a profit directly (I don't mean recuperating the expenses of running the site) from other peoples work
and doesn't share it with the people who provide the content (value) it isn't non-profit filesharing anymore but a bunch of guys exploiting other peoples work for their own financial gain .THAT could be called 'piracy' !
Filesharing is the market telling the manufacturers that their product is over-priced and distributed in a way that belongs in History's Landfill , plain and simple.

I really hope even die-hard anarcho-libertarians still believe in
paying people fairly for their work, services and/or goods ?

There were other social networks before Facebook and there were other trackers before TPB, what made them successful was their execution. TPB was of course a business and a very successful one at that, if they didn't have all that advertising there wouldn't have been a site, it takes money to support all that bandwidth.

Your example of "piracy" being profiting off other's work could also be applied to a used book store. Some do say used books are evil, same goes for used video games, consumers (and logic) go against them.

The thing is any profit TPB makes is off freely reproduced digital goods, so rather than take profits from others they're creating them out of almost nothing. Of course creators should be rewarded for their products, but they should be rewarded voluntarily on the market, not through artificially granted monopolies backed up by the guns of the state.

The fact of the matter is musicians these days can make more money off ads on Youtube than they can selling their music on iTunes. The business models have to change with the changing environment and advancing technologies, otherwise we'd all still be paying the horse and buggy makers for their services with cars and planes being illegal.

The specific difference between making money off the 'pirated' good and off ad space is that when making money off the movie/music/game etc by selling it to people is the actual piracy', whereas since the download is free, the site is free to use, the ad space has nothing to do with the good being shared. TPB is making money off their digital surface - not off of Lethal Weapon 4 or a Linkin Park album.
