Senators to Apple: Pull iPhone DUI checkpoint alert apps

By Gregg Keizer

Four U.S. senators Tuesday called on Apple to yank iPhone and iPad apps that help drunken drivers evade police, saying the programs are "harmful to public safety."

The CEO of the company that makes one such app said the senators' demand was "a knee-jerk reaction."

Sens. Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Charles Schumer (D-NY), Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Tom Udall (D-NM) asked Scott Forstall, the head of Apple's iPhone software group, to pull an unspecified number of apps from the company's App Store. The senators also made similar requests of Google's CEO Eric Schmidt and Research in Motion's (RIM) co-CEOs, James Balsillie and Michael Lazaridis.

"Giving drunk drivers a free tool to evade checkpoints, putting innocent families and children at risk, is a matter of public concern," the senators said in a letter to the executives at the three companies. "We hope that you will give our request to remove these applications from your store immediate consideration."

This is Bull.........! DUI checkpoints are illegal and unconstitutional and have shown to be ineffective at catching drunk drivers except in a few cases.

These check points are nothing more than revenue generators for the police. These senators have to read the constitution again because they are violating our right to free and unabated movement and travel. Papers please!

If these systems worked why do we have the same cast of characters being arrested time and time again for the same offense? These people are sick and need medical attention but they are going to violate me because of someone else's habits?

These people are seven, eight times convicted yet they still drive drunk without regard to any laws or having their license taken. Addiction is what it is and they will do anything to fill the void.

So what makes these senators think this is good to treat the masses like cattle in the name of repeat offenders. We are all guilty because someone else did the crime?

This is non-sense to say everybody gets punished for the crimes of a few!

It's just like the gun laws that criminals don't adhere to anyway but yet they want our guns.

This whole collective mindset is communism plain and simple. I don't like drunk drivers as much as the next guy but to tell me I have to submit to a warrant-less search because the drunks are out is insane. I don't drink or do drugs but I am condemned for the actions of others. It's horsesh!%!

PS and how many senators can you names that have been arrest for DUI or drug possession? It's hypocrisy at it's finest.

And people that say I have nothing to hide are lying and DON'T get it. It's not about you it's about the criminals running the show. And everybody has something to hide so don't use that lie on us!!!!!!! Remember the last perfect man died on a cross.
