A Kentucky man has been sentenced to 33 months in jail for writing a poem supposedly threatening Obama.

Associated Press reports:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A Kentucky man who acknowledged writing a poem threatening the life of President Barack Obama was sentenced Monday by a federal judge to 33 months in prison. [...]

The poem, titled "The Sniper," was posted on a website called NewSaxon.org, first in 2007 and again in 2009 after Obama took office.

"The bullet that he has chambered is one of the purest pride, And the inspiration on the casing reads DIE negro DIE," the four-stanza poem reads. It does not name Obama.

"The bullet screams toward its mark bringing with it death, and where there was once a face there is nothing left..." the poem said.

An attorney for Spencer, Laura Wyrosdick, argued that Spencer's threat was a "one-time deviation from his normal life."

"I don't believe and I'll never believe that this was a credible threat to the president," Wyrosdick said.
The full poem can be read here.

This is clearly a hysterical overreaction by petty tyrants. The man did not take one step towards actually carrying out any violent act, the poem was clearly in vain. By the same standards, Barack Obama should be sentenced to jail for "threatening" to murder the Jonas brothers with a predator drone. For a country which prides itself on having supposed "freedom of speech," sentencing someone to jail for a flippantly written poem is pathetic.
