Hilarious Video: Union Goon Makes a Fool Out of Himself in Stossel Debate

I think we got an interesting insight into the Union member's mindset about competition and how they view themselves. If there is one thing that one can take away from this show is this: "Collusion of Unions with the Government" or "Collusion of any business with the Government" spells death to a free market idea that this country was founded on (among other important things, of course). - cdbm2012

6546 There is no free market solution to transporting someone who lives in the Bronx to a job in Manhattan for $2.25. A free market enterprise would not enter into that business. However, it is absolutely essential for the NYC economy and the welfare of the citizens itself that this service IS provided. Cost of living in Manhattan is beyond the means of the lesser skilled labor needed to keep the city moving. Without mass transit, NYC would not be the NYC we know. It would be much smaller.

Like most arguments, I find there are points I agree with on both sides. It is definitely not the case that the union "goon" made a fool of himself. I think there are enough defenders of the dollar vans (and I agree with many of those points). Let me focus on the union guy's side.

There are certain things that the free market cannot provide. Especially undertakings that require huge amounts of capital that don't benefit the project initiators. Mass transit is a perfect example.

You have to ask yourself, why didn't the free market build a mass transit system? Why did the gov't have to do it? Because, it costs (in today's terms) billions of dollars with no profits. What DOES benefit is the city of NY itself and it's citizens.

I can see the union guy's point. If private enterprise takes away too much MTA funding, then mass transit will collapse. Private enterprise does not care if someone from another market segment gets screwed. (IE he does not care if the Bronx guy doesn't get to work since he serves another market).

That being said, I don't at all believe dollar vans threaten the MTA or mass transit. It threatens the Unions which is NOT the same thing as the institution of mass transit.

70105 Chris Wu,

I think you got your facts wrong (you would have to watch entire debate on cdbm2012 channel on YouTube) . The argument you make that "why didn't the free market build a mass transit system?" is simply erroneous. New York subway system and bus system were started and operated by a private sector UNTIL the government intervened and took over (the question is why? Was it because of the "gravy train" they saw in this operation, constant money taken from the citizens in the form of taxation?). So no, this point you are trying to make is invalid.

There is no point to the Union's guy. He represents the breed from the 60's of thugs who brute forced their way into their members' lives. They are relic of the past and it's time to get rid of them.

As I said, go back to cdbm2012 channel, watch this entire episode (the playlist), and then come back and comment. Your facts and arguments are simply wrong.
