11 Reasons We'd be Better Off with No Government at All

Chris | InformationLiberation

No government at all? Outlandish, you say?! After you read these 11 reasons, you'll be the first calling for shutting the whole shebang down!

1. We'd have absolutely no taxes. That means everything across the board would be cheaper and everyone would have about twice as much money.

2. We'd have no foreign wars. The US spends $1 trillion dollars a year on our interventionist foreign policy. If we shut the whole government down, that's $1 trillion dollars a year going towards computers, housing, food, technology etc., instead of being spent on bombs to kill people.

3. We'd have no corporate welfare. That means no more banker bailouts, no more handouts to the health insurance companies and big pharma, and no more subsidies for connected special interests. That translates to lower prices and more competition. Health care costs would drastically fall and housing would finally be more affordable.

4. We'd have no more drug war. The miserable drug war would come to an end and we'd stop wasting trillions of dollars to keep drug prices high.

5. We'd have no more police. That means instead of the government running a billion dollar protection racket with people getting abused left and right, we could take the billions we give to the government and instead pay private bodyguards to police our streets as an actual service to consumers at a mere fraction of the cost. The police would not be abusive for the same reason a private bodyguard doesn't beat up the person they're supposed to protect, they're dependent on you for their paycheck. Also they wouldn't have to enforce ridiculous drug laws which account for the majority of supposed crime.

6. No TSA! Let the companies themselves decide how to protect their passengers. If people want to fly in a jail cell and go through naked body scanners, so be it. If there is a market for it, the airliners could make special flights with extra security. As for the rest of us, we'd like to keep our clothes on, thanks!

7. Everyone could get a job in private industry. With private industry finally being able to keep the entirety of their earnings, everyone across the board would have more money. All corporations, big and small, would have double their current income, that means they can hire more people and put people back to work. Even a politician with absolutely no skills could get a job!

8. No more Federal Reserve. That means no more fiat money, no more business cycle, and no more inflation. Private industry could coin the money and have full reserve banks. We could move towards a %100 gold backed currency globally and give people truly sound money. No more devaluation of our money through the printing press, and no more silent corporate welfare through inflation.

9. No more artificially induced bubbles. Without the fed inducing the business cycle people would be able to invest wisely and the market could adjust faster to changes in the economy. Companies would be forced to adapt to serve consumers instead of merely adapting to gaming the system to get corporate welfare.

10. No more entrenched elite. The government's illegitimate monopoly on force is the only thing with allows a tiny group to stay in power perpetually through gaming the system and profiting off government handouts and grants of monopoly privilege. End the government, and you destroy their tool of conquest.

11. Freedom. What more is there to say? Without a government there can be no ruling class which claims powers over others. People can organize themselves voluntarily in their own self-interest, the same way we do now in almost every sector of our lives. Our nanny state system is what keeps people hobbled and dependent, remove the rules and restrictions and give people freedom and you'll see a complete societal turn around, just read this!

72184 Well put. Human beings are good by nature and most people's ideas of a state of nature of "anarchy" are always colored by an interpretation of individuals living in an unnatural system. "Savages" and "barbarians" who have no want or need for oppressive governments historically have much more leisure time than "civilized" folk.

72184 *I meant to say: "Human beings are good by nature and most people's ideas of a state of nature *or "anarchy" are always colored by an interpretation of individuals living in an unnatural system."

and also that:

despite the theoretical appeal of having no government, the fact remains that modern man has become too dependent on government to give it up. The idea of efficiently enforcing property rights (ultimately entrenching the rich) is more important than anything else to most people. This cannot be accomplished without government.

James Madison said, "If men were angels, no government would be necessary."

The current system of social hierarchy causes us to vie for power and respect in exchange for our moral integrity. to As long as men want to be powerful they will need a referee to legitimize their conquests. As for the little guy, he does not want to get rid of the system because he dreams of one day becoming the big guy, who is nobody without his own little guy to exploit. That said, it is a nice thought to picture man in his natural state of freedom.

99230 Absolute fantasy...In the absence of government a system of gangland style patronage inevitably springs up in it's place. Think the mafioso-like rule of the Roman Emperors after the Republic fell. And unless you can convince the rest of the world to go along with this ridiculous abolishment of government scheme, you leave your utopian anarchy vurnerable to instant attack in the absence of a military. Mercenaries tend to change loyalties whenever a better offer comes along. Government is regrettably necesscary for the protection of the rights of all and the provision of public services. Reform is needed, not half-baked, poorly thought out theories.

21242 Fantasy? You don't realize what youre saying is the fantasy? gangland style violence would spring up, lol, you don't realize thats what we have now? The biggest gang runs all the violence and it calls itself the government. The naive are the ones who think we need some government with a monopoly on force to keep us safe. I'd take even the fantasy of anarchy you have in your mind over the current gang run anarchy we live under. The gov doesn't even follow its own laws, thats real lawlessness! yet they will jail you for nothing! Reform is needed, we need to shut it down and set up a private system of based on insurance and insurance courts and private police. It's called anarcho-capitalism, read about it because thats whats coming if we don't fall into total tyranny.

72184 Freedom may be an unrealistic objective for modern man to reach en masse, but it is more than a fantasy. There was a time when all humans lived in harmony with nature and without government in the modern sense. If you get far enough away from the developed world you can still find people living (really living as opposed to our current pitiful state) in tribal societies.

Of course as someone already pointed out, this kind of "utopia" is easily razed when a modern militarized nation discoverers and conquers it. However the only reason that any militarized nation exists is that its citizens are bound by fear to a "social contract." Maybe if people were not so afraid to die or lose their possessions we could all lead such idyllic lives without the risk of being overrun by some else's slaves or mercenaries.

In any event, one could argue that it is better to die free than to live in captivity...

2447 The government is coming to an end whether you like it or not. Are you going to waste your time trying to hold it together or are you going to take things into your own hands and learn what a free society is? People like yourselves are what led to Hitler, the government loses control and they demand a strong leader, cowards like yourself then build up some tyrant who goes around murdering anarchists+communists+whatever for the glory of the state. Better wise up because things are about to hit the fan.

If you want to believe in a minimalist state, so be it, I just think it's a complete waste of time and a virtual impossibility. Government by definition is a territorial monopoly on force. The idea you can give some entity the sole power to tax (a monopoly on force) and the sole power of the courts (a monopoly on determining the limits of its own powers), and then assume this entity will restrict itself to only x y and z is incredibly naive. I don't think even your 6 year old niece would believe it. There is no check on the government's powers because it's a monopoly, it's that simple. That's why the price of government goes up and up and the service gets worse and worse, it's a monopoly!

So what do we do about it? Simple, let private industry take over all the roles of government and let the free market and the people decide. Insurance would take over most of the roles of protection. Fire insurers would run the fire department. Property insurance would run the police, etc. It's really quite simple and not necessarily that different from what we have now.

Just imagine the entire government being privatized and only the things people actually want and are willing to pay for surviving. So, obviously no more drug war, no more foreign wars, no more regulation czars, no more FTC and the thousand other alphabet agencies. If people want something, they're more than willing to pay for it. Just look at organic standards, private companies like Quality Assurance International are paid by the food producers to certify their food organic. That same system of private regulation and certification would be applied to everything once the government got out of the way. Every industry would be infinitely better and the society would be infinitely safer.

This is the 21st century equivalent of saying the earth is round, I wouldn't expect anyone to understand it all from just this one article. If you want a more thorough explanation watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZLFylC5WtM

69207 WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT ANY INSURANCE AT ALL ONLY LAZY HUMANS WHO CANNOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR LIVES AND THEIR ACTIONS BUY INSURANCE. ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS, YOUR CHOICES, YOUR BEHAVIOR, YOUR DEBT. THE NATURE OF ALL FASCIST GOVERNMENTS IS TO PUSH HUMANS TO THE BREAKING POINT THAT IS THE NATURE OF ALL GOVERNMENTS. NO HEALTH INSURANCE, NO HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE, NO LIFE INSURANCE, NO INSURANCE AT ALL NO LICENSES AT ALL, PAY ZERO TAXS,FOR TAXS ARE THE LIFE BLOOD OF THESE VAMPIRE SUBHUMANS,THESE LEACHES. THE ONLY WAY OUT IS TO AWAKEN TO THE NATURE OF YOUR IMPENDING DEMISE, AND SOON, GOOD LUCK, OPEN YOUR MIND TO ALL POSSIBILITIES...

Well the point is in a free society people would want protections, it would be up to the people to decide what they as free human beings want to partake in. Some people would want private police etc, some people wouldn't, it's up to them. As much as people want and are willing to pay for, they will get (and have companies competing to serve them in every possible way, just look at how some companies will do deep regression therapy on people to determine what type of car they want or how much apple flavor should be in some snapple drink etc.! See: http://www.informationliberation.com/?id=27544 ).

There is no reason to prevent someone who wants to fly in a jail cell from doing so, it's their right to ask for it and to do so. It's not their right to demand everyone else, who doesn't want to, do so.

I personally believe most people are basically good etc. but even someone who doesn't should be able to recognize the rationality that we would still have an orderly civil society without some state bossing everyone around. People tend to act in their self-interest, most everyone wants more goods instead of less goods. It just so happens freedom is what facilitates the maximum amount of wealth and prosperity for all. It's really quite beautiful because it means we don't need to pick between a wealthy but immoral society, or a poor but free society. We can have both a wealthy and free society! (and in fact to have either demands both)

7664 Your problem is not that you have government, but that you have bad government. Qualitiy of life is actually highest in nations that pay more taxes than you, not those that pay less. The difference is that their cultures do not fear and mistrust intellectuals as the USA does, so they are better educated and make smarter choices (like understanding that taxes are a fair price to pay for the benefit of civilization).

7461 Chris you have a lot to learn about forms of Government, and every one who posted a comment might want to watch this video on YouTube about what the American form of Government should be according to the founding fathers of the United States of America.

Taxes are no more the "price you pay for civilization" than paying the mafia off to keep them from breaking your legs is the "price you pay for protection."

The American government was very possibly the "best government(s)" ever to be created. They made an error in their assumption government would be representative of the people because there would be competition for representation. They missed the fact they were giving one entity total monopoly powers, and so therefor any restrictions put on that government would be judged to be legal by that very same government. See: http://www.informationliberation.com/?id=30424

Of course, they didn't all miss it. Patrick Henry was against the constitution because he said it was going to create an empire (and how right he was). You can read about it here: http://www.informationliberation.com/?id=30128

"If we admit this consolidated government, it will be because we like a great, splendid one. Some way or other we must be a great and mighty empire; we must have an army, and a navy, and a number of things. When the American spirit was in its youth, the language of America was different: liberty, sir, was then the primary object. But now, sir, the American spirit, assisted by the ropes and chains of consolidation, is about to convert this country into a powerful and mighty empire. If you make the citizens of this country agree to become the subjects of one great, consolidated empire of America, your government will not have sufficient energy to keep them together. Such a government is incompatible with the genius of republicanism. There will be no checks, no real balances, in this government." - Patrick Henry speaking in opposition to the constitution.

The point is regardless of what they did at the time, they made a noble effort, it worked out rather well and they had the right ideas. The problem is they didn't take them to their logical conclusion. IE if government that is best is that which governs least, the best government is no government at all. We know more now than we did then, we know the fatal flaw in the idea you could ever have a 'limited' government, it's impossible because it's a total monopoly and therefor the judge of the limits of its own powers. See: http://www.informationliberation.com/?id=30467

This is a good thing because now we can get it right.
