911 Operator (Barely) Disciplined Over Callous Response To Girl As Her Parents Died

911 Operator Disciplined Over Response
Dispatcher Accused Of Not Being Sensitive Enough

Oh... My... F*%king... God... This is the saddest and most disturbing thing I've ever heard. The dispatcher was not even fired and the police are defending her saying she 'did everything right'. - ChrisDETROIT -- A 911 dispatcher who is accused of responding coldheartedly to a child pleading for help as her mother lay dying has been disciplined.

Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans said that the dispatcher acted appropriately by sending a car in timely fashion, but he said she could have shown more "sensitivity" toward the girl as she discovered her mother and her mother's boyfriend had been fatally shot.

Police would not release the dispatchers name and what disciplinary actions she received, saying both were personnel matters.

The dispatcher came under fire when police released a 911 call of the double homicides in hopes of garnering the public's help in finding the killer.

Derrick Dennard Smith, 42, was later tracked down in California and arrested in connection with the murders of the girl's mother, Monica Botello, 27, and her boyfriend Purcell Carson, 26.

Police said Botello's 8-year-old daughter and her 6-year-old half-sister hid in the home on Glastonbury Road during the shooting. Neither of the children were injured.

After Smith and an unknown accomplice left the home, Botello's daughter called 911 from her mother's cell phone, police said.

"My mommy's in the basement and I need emergency," the little girl said.

"This dispatcher in that case did everything right. I mean, everything but demeanor maybe," - Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans

[Listen to the full tape for how long she stalls, it's worse than this video even, 'how old is your sister', 'You just said your mom didn't live there?' etc. Then at the end she doesn't even respond? It sounds like she hung up on the girl? Dispatchers are supposed to stay on the line until the police arrive.]

[Take note of the partial transcript and how it leaves out some of the worst parts of the tape. Though, at least they reprinted some of it, almost every other news report acted like the story was just a footnote.]

7190 Uhhh.. i just listened to this and it did not sound THAT bad. I mean, it sounded to me like the operator could very well have been trying to get the information as quickly as possible in the shortest amount of time to try and save the mother's life. Just because she didn't sound like she was empathizing with the girl doesn't mean she's not a professional and is not doing her job right.

As the girl announced she found the address she interrupts and barks at her with the irrelevant 'how old is your sister', you don't find that disturbing and unprofessional? 'You just said your mom didn't live there?' challenging the girl? How is that professional? How about ignoring her and hanging up on her at the end? Are operators not supposed to stay until the police arrive? What is professional about being a total bitch to a girl who is watching her parents die? She didn't even have any helpful advice, the girl herself seemed to decide to run out to the street, the supposed professional said go searching around for mail.

"Police said they released only a portion because the unabridged version contains information investigators do not want to make public."

What else is in the full tape?

Just wait for the microchip, then we won't need old-fashioned empathy or feelings altogether anymore - and the world will run so much smoother, when the elite can focus on treating us like the automatons we are instead of having to make pretense at caring.

Wow, looked at all the articles today, I honestly feel sick. Everyday the amount of unconstitutional behavior by the supposed upholders of the constitution increases dramatically.

Maybe this dispatcher has been properly bred for her job.

i mean really, where do they get these people? And what exactly is her function? Because the way she is isn't normal. And what she is doing goes right along the lines of the agenda - we're supposed to be like machines, and especially children now are supposed to grow up to be like that. Dehumanized and emotionally dead - total lack of empathy.

Because if it was just her own lack of empathy or whatever, she would've surely gotten fired. Since that doesn't happen it's obvious to me the public is going to have to get used to this and worse treatment from the authorities from now on.

For what is going to happen in the next few decades would be impossible if people had their empathy and humanity left.

76118 Are you people stupid? Her job is to get emergency personnel to the home, not be "empathetic". She wants to know how old the sister is because maybe she knows what her damned address is. Who the hell doesn't tech an 8 year old what address they live on? You people really expect her to get all hysterical and start screaming?

Yeah, i guess we're pretty stupid and you're the smart one. But us stupid people, who are in the majority here it seems, don't want people like that answering our 911 calls. You smart people can have her. Problem solved?

97121 Hey 76118 maybe if you knew more info you would be such a bi+ch about the little girl not knowing the address. Guess what!? She wasnt at her own house. They were visiting someone when it all happened. Thats why she says her mother doesnt live there (and if I recall from when I listened to the 911 call she also says she doesnt know the address bc its not her house)!! The dispatcher deserved to be fired. I had to call 911 when I was 9 when someone tried to shoot my brother and I was hysterical and the operator I spoke with handled things the way this person should have!

8517 Poor child, to come across this chilling, cold hearted bitch at the lowest ebb in her life is just beyond very sad. And this woman is still a 911 dispatcher, does she have no shame, why hasn't she resigned at least? she should be on her knees in the streets asking for the forgiveness of the public who pay her salary. Children in crisis deserve better than this Detroit, sort it out.

131183 This is truly a heart-filled tragedy. There are not enough words that can be said that will actually sum up this entire disaster. Yes, I believe that the 911 operator was totally unprofessional and inconsiderate of the child’s needs, considering the child’s current situation. I don’t know about any of you, but when I listened to the 911 recording, it seemed as though the operator was heartless. Yes your right, I’m sure the job requirement of a 911 dispatcher does not state that an operator must be “sensitive and/or empathetic,” but I believe that is does state that the duties must consist of “…Determining the nature and location of the emergency.” I must admit that the dispatcher did receive the location of the emergency, i.e. address. However, in my opinion, the dispatcher failed to determine the “nature of the emergency,” i.e. Tayanna crying “my mom is almost dead and my dad is dead, he is not breathing.”
In addition to the above, please keep in mind the age of the victim, Tayanna. She was not an adult; she was just eight years old. Either the operator had no clue how to successfully approach the situation at hand, i.e. reflect the lack of effective training and/or the operator simply “did not care.” Therefore, I believe that the Mayor should enforce additional training to all communication personnel. In my opinion, the problem/ does not only reflect the dispatcher that took Tayanna’s plea for help, but it reflects the entire City as a whole.

198228 Just the media spoon feeding us our 'faux outrage' of the day. Every time the media invents something for us to be outraged by, they see dollar signs. Just wait, tomorrow you'll forget all about the 911 dispatcher when the media comes up with a new outrage du jour for the sheep to be shocked (shocked! I tell you) about.
