‘I’ve stood around too long’

Central Kings students wear pink to send bullies a message

Central Kings Rural High School students David Shepherd and Travis Price

CAMBRIDGE — Two students at Central Kings Rural High School fought back against bullying recently, unleashing a sea of pink after a new student was harassed and threatened when he showed up wearing a pink shirt.

The Grade 9 student arrived for the first day of school last Wednesday and was set upon by a group of six to 10 older students who mocked him, called him a homosexual for wearing pink and threatened to beat him up.

The next day, Grade 12 students David Shepherd and Travis Price decided something had to be done about bullying.

"It’s my last year. I’ve stood around too long and I wanted to do something," said David.

They used the Internet to encourage people to wear pink and bought 75 pink tank tops for male students to wear. They handed out the shirts in the lobby before class last Friday — even the bullied student had one.

"I made sure there was a shirt for him," David said.

They also brought a pink basketball to school as well as pink material for headbands and arm bands. David and Travis figure about half the school’s 830 students wore pink.

It was hard to miss the mass of students in pink milling about in the lobby, especially for the group that had harassed the new Grade 9 student.

"The bullies got angry," said Travis. "One guy was throwing chairs (in the cafeteria). We’re glad we got the response we wanted."

David said one of the bullies angrily asked him whether he knew pink on a male was a symbol of homosexuality.

He told the bully that didn’t matter to him and shouldn’t to anyone.

"Something like the colour of your shirt or pants, that’s ridiculous," he said.

"Our intention was to stand up for this kid so he doesn’t get picked on."

Travis said the bullies "keep giving us dirty looks, but we know we have the support of the whole student body.

"Kids don’t need this in their lives, worrying about what to wear to school. That should be the last thing on their minds."

When the bullied student put on his pink shirt Friday and saw all the other pink in the lobby, "he was all smiles. It was like a big weight had been lifted off is shoulder," David said. No one at the school would reveal the student’s name.

Travis said that growing up, he was often picked on for wearing store-brand clothes instead of designer duds.

The two friends said they didn’t take the action looking for publicity, but rather to show leadership in combating what they say is frequent bullying in schools.

Bullies are cowards, they have no self esteem. Therefore, they go around picking on others who they "perceive" to be weaker than them. They are pitiful and need help.

I stand and applaud what Travis and David organized at their school. All of them are the courageous ones. The bullies are pathetic. I hope our youth stand tall for what is right and don't cave to society's prejudice, ignorance, hatred and fear mongering. The adults in this country could learn a very important lesson here.

Kudos to you guys and the whole school for having the balls to do the right thing!

Pink shirts were a fad when I was in High school ( last year). The "cool" boys wore pink.... Idk, I think we had some good counter-culture where I came from.

this was a great way to react to the situation non violence shows alot more character and mind power regaurdless of what the bullying was about race,sexuality,ect. people deserve to be treated with respect and kindness. keep fighting ignorance with true mind power guys.

Pink as a symbol of homosexuality comes from nazi germany, where nazi's made homosexuals in concentration camps wear pink so they could be easily identified. Before this pink was considered as a 'strong' and 'masculine' colour, and blue was considered feminine. Funny how meaning changes through cultural symbolism.

You left out an important part: how did the school authorities react to this disruptive behavior? Bullies usually get away with it because the teachers depend on them to pound any square pegs into the round holes that the syst em assigns them to. That's why any victim who finally hits back gets suspended, expelled or packed off to the Special School (the one with the eight-foot fences) while the bully who provoked him gets a routine slap-on-the-wrist.

Like it or not, pink on a male, "IN THESE DAYS", represents homosexuality.
Well the gays seem to have taken pink as a symbolic color.

Is this a story about about people standing up to bullies or is it just another push for GAY RIGHTS???

A male who wears pink to school is either stupid or wants to atttract attention to himself as being a homosexual.

With kids growing up in this ever increasing, confused and backwards thinking world, it's quite understandable that some would react in a negative way towards anything that represents something they detest.

VERY intelligent.
Not only are Travis and David heroes, they have also shown intelligence. As long as they continue to follow through with all they desire in life, no matter how hard or easy the struggle may be, they will achieve their goals.
I hope the right people come across this report on the two of you and offer you both the chance of a life time.

As for my opinion, I think what these guys did was great! Standing up to bullying is what we all should be doing, we jus don't realize that every single one of us has the power to do it.

And just why in the hell wasn't the little bastards who started the damn trouble tossed out of school? Kids behave badly and torment others because teachers refuse to take a stand against it, thus showing their approval. I say throw the jerks out of school and fire any teacher who stands by and allows it to occur unchecked. Education is a privilege, not a right, earn it.

My brother and I would just beat the shit out of bullies for fun. Not for any moral reasons, or to really help out their victims. I guess we were bullies in our own way, yet it didn't make sense, nor was it fun for us to bully helpless victims. I can't tell you how many times we beat the shit out of a kid in the Applebee's parking lot for being a stupid prick.

We were alpha males and in our eyes, the people picking on other people were also "alpha", so they were the biggest threat to us..... not the calculus geeks hehe. ( wannabes most of em)

I am 27 years old now. Looking back on it, I don't have any regrets. Hell, one of the kids my bro and I ended up beating turned out to be one of my Frat bros and best friends. I have dinner with my wife and him and his wife every few weeks.

He actually told me that he not only deserved that beating, but it helped him chill out and stop bullying.

Fuck these pink shirts. Kick the teeth in of the next bully, I mean beat the fuck out of him. Then do it to the next well known bully in your school. Once the school catches on to this "bully's loose their teeth" policy.... there won't be a bully # 3
