‘I’ve stood around too long’

Central Kings students wear pink to send bullies a message

Central Kings Rural High School students David Shepherd and Travis Price

CAMBRIDGE — Two students at Central Kings Rural High School fought back against bullying recently, unleashing a sea of pink after a new student was harassed and threatened when he showed up wearing a pink shirt.

The Grade 9 student arrived for the first day of school last Wednesday and was set upon by a group of six to 10 older students who mocked him, called him a homosexual for wearing pink and threatened to beat him up.

The next day, Grade 12 students David Shepherd and Travis Price decided something had to be done about bullying.

"It’s my last year. I’ve stood around too long and I wanted to do something," said David.

They used the Internet to encourage people to wear pink and bought 75 pink tank tops for male students to wear. They handed out the shirts in the lobby before class last Friday — even the bullied student had one.

"I made sure there was a shirt for him," David said.

They also brought a pink basketball to school as well as pink material for headbands and arm bands. David and Travis figure about half the school’s 830 students wore pink.

It was hard to miss the mass of students in pink milling about in the lobby, especially for the group that had harassed the new Grade 9 student.

"The bullies got angry," said Travis. "One guy was throwing chairs (in the cafeteria). We’re glad we got the response we wanted."

David said one of the bullies angrily asked him whether he knew pink on a male was a symbol of homosexuality.

He told the bully that didn’t matter to him and shouldn’t to anyone.

"Something like the colour of your shirt or pants, that’s ridiculous," he said.

"Our intention was to stand up for this kid so he doesn’t get picked on."

Travis said the bullies "keep giving us dirty looks, but we know we have the support of the whole student body.

"Kids don’t need this in their lives, worrying about what to wear to school. That should be the last thing on their minds."

When the bullied student put on his pink shirt Friday and saw all the other pink in the lobby, "he was all smiles. It was like a big weight had been lifted off is shoulder," David said. No one at the school would reveal the student’s name.

Travis said that growing up, he was often picked on for wearing store-brand clothes instead of designer duds.

The two friends said they didn’t take the action looking for publicity, but rather to show leadership in combating what they say is frequent bullying in schools.

7565 David Shepherd and Travis Price are HEROES. They stood up for their fellow human being, and they didn't let the sexually insecure bullies get away with anything. Good for Shepherd & Price & for ALL the students who helped them. It's wonderful to hear about cooperation between self-confident and caring people. HOORAY! If any of you readers know these young men, please tell them that even total strangers know that what they did was right, and that we thank them and applaud them. YOWZAH!

I hope more such stories emerge.

Schools are training grounds for soldiers. I noticed when I went to school there was this folk demon called the homosexual, it was used as an insult, and I am referring to a stage when I was too young to even knew what the word meant. To prove yourself a 'man' you were meant to be tough. The message seemed to be that tough meant straight and that was a good thing. It was towards the end of my schooling I worked on a van delivering white goods in the summer holidays, and the driver was one of the toughest people I have ever met, if someone upset him on the road he would get out and yank the offending driver out by the collar. One day he told me he was homosexual.

The conclusion of this moral tale, the one I take anyway, is that not only was the social conditioning people are put through based on fiction, it is designed to set people against people and eradicate peace. Courtesy of the Internet we are able to find out what knowledge had been deliberately hidden.

213120 Travis and David should be applauded. Although they were not looking for publicity, if these kind of ideas would only be shared with other schools it would really make a difference. At the end of the day, there is only so much that teachers and parents can do and it takes a few brave students to stand up for what they believe in and inspire their peers. Well done guys.

16670 i think this is a lot better of an example of how to deal with bullying by pulling together as a small society and doing whats right to make the few feel insecure in their skewed view of whats "acceptable" or not. instead of implementing rules like : one week detetion for hugging , or expoltion (spelling?) for fighting or arguing or touching as some school in the burbs have decided to do..... the better lesson is to teach kids to know whats right and wrong acceptable and not so in the real world they dont need a teacher or principle to "suspend them" when they make fun of a homosexual and he FUCKS YOU UP .... dont forget gay guys are still guys man they have nuts just like you a muscle build up just like you and they can take martial arts and kick ur ass or they can just be nuts like some of us are and just fuck you up cuz youre straight,..... the world is changing.... you better get on

124197 I think that you guys are Heroes, I am proud of you and the rest of the students who chose to stand up and be counted. Bullies are always on the outside looking in, in life and always look for kids that are less able to look after themselves to bully. My daughter was bullied at school for being a big girl and she had nobody to look after her let alone the teachers who are supposedly there to teach and watch out for this occurring. Again I am so proud of you and your initiative, this is leadership and star quality.
