The owner of the China Rose restaurant in Freeport is facing an upstream battle after Game Wardens seized his pet fish. Wardens seized ten Koi from Cuong Ly, valued at about $700. Ly says he bought the fish 15 years ago and they've been in the restaurant's aquarium ever since. The owner says he wasn't aware of a recent state law banning the possession of Koi and other types of carp. Wardens say Koi, if released into the wild, are a threat to native fish and plants. Ly has been charged with possession of illegal fish and faces fines up to $10,000. Ly says wardens blatantly abused their powers and has hired an attorney to look into the matter. |
