U.S. and Russia Announce Online Piracy Crackdown Agreement
posted 12/23/2012, 6:48 PM (TorrentFreak) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian] The United States and Russia have announced an agreement to crack down on online piracy. The countries have agreed to disrupt sites that facilitate infringement and take action against their operators. As a result, uncertain times may lie ahead for the many BitTorrent and other file-sharing sites hosted in Russia. The agreement also allows for the improved takedown of infringing content and discussions on allowing Russian rightsholders to use the United States’ “six strikes” system.... Graphic Novel Declared A Terrorist Operation By US Government, Advance Money Seized
posted 12/21/2012, 3:19 PM (Techdirt) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian] This story is almost too bizarre to believe. Journalist David Axe wrote a graphic novel about "the Lord's Resistance Army" rebel group in the Democratic Republic of Congo (which many people may be aware of due to the controversial viral "Kony 2012" story from earlier this year). No matter what you think of the situation with Kony, it seems bizarre that the book itself (which is just about Kony) should be declared a product of a terrorist organization and the money associated with it frozen. Men Face Deportation For Running World's Least-Visited Torrent Site
posted 12/21/2012, 3:19 PM (TorrentFreak) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian] Three men behind a brand new torrent site that almost nobody visited say they have had their lives turned upside down by Australian authorities. An unfortunate series of events, triggered by fraud committed against one of the men in South Africa, led to a police investigation and a raid. After it was discovered that the men launched a torrent site last month, all now face deportation back to their home country of Canada.... (more) |

Court Sentences Web Designer For Creating Infringing Torrent Site
posted 12/20/2012, 10:13 AM (TorrentFreak) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian] In a case lasting more than three years, a web designer who admitted that he had been contracted to work on the now-defunct StudentBay torrent site was cleared after the court found there was no evidence to suggest he had actually run the site. But in a turnaround the Court of Appeal ruled yesterday that the designer must’ve known the site would be put to infringing use and found him guilty of copyright infringement offenses.... (more) |

Australia: ISP Walks Out of Piracy Talks: “We’re Not The Internet Police”
posted 12/18/2012, 8:54 AM (TorrentFreak) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian] A leading Australian Internet service provider has pulled out of negotiations to create a warning notice scheme aimed at reducing online piracy. iiNet, the ISP that was sued by Hollywood after refusing to help chase down alleged infringers, said that it can’t make any progress with righthsolders if they don’t make their content freely available at a reasonable price. The ISP adds that holding extra data on customers’ habits is inappropriate and not their responsibility.... (more) |

Maryland: Speed Camera Company Admits 5.2 Percent Error Rates
posted 12/17/2012, 9:37 AM (The Newspaper) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian] Over the past two decades, advocates have argued the main advantage of a speed camera is that the machines never lies. Most states codify this belief with a legal presumption that the automated citation is accurate and it is up to the defendant to prove otherwise. In Baltimore, Maryland last week a leading speed camera vendor made the unprecedented admission that the technology frequently lies, but obvious examples of false readings slipped through the process due to "human error." ... Google Starts Reporting False DMCA Takedown Requests
posted 12/14/2012, 11:32 AM (TorrentFreak) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian] Google has quietly rolled out a new feature to its copyright transparency report, allowing the public to see when DMCA takedown notices sent by copyright holders are false. The search giant is currently processing more than a dozen million “infringing” links per month, but points out that not all requests sent by rightsholders are legitimate. As an example, Google cites a request where a major U.S. motion picture studio asked them to censor their IMDb page and official trailer.... (more) |

"Six Strikes" Scheme May Lead to Lawsuits Against Pirates
posted 12/13/2012, 6:34 AM (TorrentFreak) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian] Early next year the controversial "six-strikes" anti-piracy system will kick off in the U.S. While the initiative itself has a focus on educating instead of punishing BitTorrent pirates, ISPs are obliged to hand over IP-addresses of repeat infringers to the MPAA and RIAA. Commenting on this largely overlooked aspect, CCI director Jill Lesser confirmed to TorrentFreak that lawsuits may indeed be initiated based on information collected under the program. ... (more) |

TSA's Grip on Internal Travel is Tightening
posted 12/12/2012, 4:51 AM (Wendy McElroy) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian]
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is tightening its grip on domestic travcel. I don't mean the random, unpredictable security checks at bus, subway and train stations which already exist. I mean a coordinated and systematic police control of internal travel within America. Groundwork is being laid.

Hollywood Anti-Piracy Group Takes "Pirate" Domains To Avoid Prosecuting
posted 12/12/2012, 4:46 AM (TorrentFreak) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian] A recent tip followed by a trawl through the WHOIS domain registry has revealed that a Hollywood anti-piracy group is now the proud owner of a number of file-sharing related domains. Is a major conspiracy ready to unfold? Well, not exactly. It appears that some previously happy site owners have been willingly handing over their domains to the Federation Against Copyright Theft in order to avoid visiting the inside of a court room.... The Everyday Absurdities of the TSA
posted 12/06/2012, 1:58 AM (Douglas French) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian] ‘Tis the season to be jolly. But then there’s the TSA. No government agency inspires “Bah Humbug” like the Transportation Safety Administration. For those who travel, the agency is 65,000 employees dressed in blue to make airline travel as annoying as possible.
Last week the House Aviation Subcommittee held a hearing to discuss common sense improvements for the agency in charge of transportation security but TSA boss John Pistole thinks he has it all figured out and refused to tes... (more) |
CIA and Pentagon Fusion Revolutionizes Modern US Covert Action Complex
posted 12/06/2012, 1:53 AM (The Dollar Vigilante) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian] The Pentagon will expand its spy network over five years to rival the CIA in size, according to US officials, as it constructs the thus far classified Defense Clandestine Service or DCS. The project will “transform” the Defense Intelligence Agency from a Cold War, multiple-war agency to include increased operations against Islamists in Africa, North Korea-Iran weapons transfers, and Chinese military modernization that is now underway. Once completed, the DIA will have approximately 1,600 so-call... (more) |

No Warrant, No Problem: How The Government Can Still Get Your Digital Data
posted 12/06/2012, 1:48 AM (ProPublica) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian] The U.S. government isn’t allowed to wiretap American citizens without a warrant from a judge. But there are plenty of legal ways for law enforcement, from the local sheriff to the FBI, to snoop on the digital trails you create every day. Authorities can often obtain your emails and texts by going to Google or AT&T with a simple subpoena. Usually you won’t even be notified. The Senate last week took a step toward updating privacy protection for emails, but it's likely the issue will be kicked to ... (more) |

Kingston police arrest man who told kids Santa isn't real

In Kingston, it’s not the Grinch but a 24-year-old man who police say stole Christmas.
As Christmas-themed floats slowly rolled down Princess St. during Kingston’s annual Santa Claus parade, an intoxicated man shouted blasphemous lies to shocked children: Santa doesn’t exist.
The man, whose gelled hair “looked like a set of devil horns protruding from his head,” was reported to Kingston police, Const. Steve Koopman said.

"Anonymous" File-Sharing Darknet Ruled Illegal by German Court
posted 11/26/2012, 12:45 AM (TorrentFreak) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian] A court in Hamburg, Germany, has granted an injunction against a user of the anonymous and encrypted file-sharing network RetroShare . RetroShare users exchange data through encrypted transfers and the network setup ensures that the true sender of the file is always obfuscated. The court, however, has now ruled that RetroShare users who act as an exit node are liable for the encrypted traffic that’s sent by others.

Police Raid 9-Year-Old Pirate Bay Girl, Confiscate Winnie The Pooh Laptop
posted 11/23/2012, 1:08 PM (TorrentFreak) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian]
An anti-piracy company has found itself in the middle of a huge controversy. CIAPC, the company that had The Pirate Bay blocked by ISPs in Finland, tracked an alleged file-sharer and demanded a cash settlement. However, the Internet account holder refused to pay which escalated things to an unprecedented level. In response, this week police raided the home of the 9-year-old suspect and confiscated her Winnie the Pooh laptop.

Google warns UN internet treaty conference threatens free and open internet

A free and open world depends on a free and open Internet.
The Internet empowers everyone — anyone can speak, create, learn, and share. It is controlled by no one — no single organization, individual, or government. It connects the world. Today, more than two billion people are online — about a third of the planet.
But not all governments support the free and open Internet.
There is a growing backlash on Internet freedom. Forty-two countries filter an... (more) |
TSA/Airport Security: Killing Us On Christmas
posted 11/21/2012, 9:32 PM (Techdirt) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian] It's typical to preface a Techdirt article, for me at least, by backtracking to a bunch of articles on related subject matter. I'm not going to do that with another piece on the TSA. Not because there isn't enough material to choose from. Oh no, there's simply too much of it, so if you want to see insanity in its most naked form (this statement assumes you don't live next to Gary Busey), just click here and you won't be disappointed. Bamboozled: Retailers are monitoring your return habits
posted 11/20/2012, 9:11 PM (NJ.com) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian] Big brother is watching you... shop.
That’s right. Businesses can contract with a service called The Retail Equation, which will keep a digital eye on your return habits.
It’s true that return fraud -- which ranges from returning stolen merchandise for cash to what’s known as “wardrobing,” or buying and using items that a shopper doesn’t intend to keep -- is a big problem for some stores, but are you, the consumer, willing to give up some of your privacy to help? ... (more) While I see nothing wrong with this service, I found this quote hilarious:
“While we want to maintain a customer-friendly returns policy, The Retail Equation system helps us minimize returns fraud; which is often tied to bigger organized crimes such as drug trafficking, and even terrorism,” said spokesman Stephen Holmes in an e-mail.
Show me one example of terrorism being financed by someone taking advantage of a store's return policy. What a complete joke, every two-bit hack now thinks they can cite "terrorism" as a justification for anything and everything. - Chris |

'A little paranoia' keeps US vigilant: FBI

Clancy in particular was talking about Operation Tripwire, a... (more) |
