FCC asked to monitor "hate speech," "misinformation" online
posted 06/01/2010, 6:22 PM (Ars Technica) [Category: Big Brother/Orwellian] Over thirty organizations want the Federal Communications Commission to open up a probe on "hate speech" and "misinformation" in media. "Hate has developed as a profit-model for syndicated radio and cable television programs masquerading as 'news'," they wrote to the FCC earlier this month.
As for the Internet, it "gives the illusion that news sources have increased, but in fact there are fewer journalists employed now than before," they charge. "Moreover, on the Internet, speakers can hide in the cloak of anonymity, emboldened to say things that they may not say in the public eye."
The groups who want this new proceeding include Free Press, the Media Access Project, Common Cause, the Prometheus Radio Project, and the League of United Latin American Citizens. Their statement, filed in the Commission's Future of Media proceeding, comes in support of a petition to the agency submitted over a year ago by the National Hispanic Media Coalition.
"Hate speech against vulnerable groups is pervasive in our media—it is not limited to a few isolated instances or any one media platform," NHMC warned the FCC in 2009. "Indeed, many large mainstream media corporations regularly air hate speech, and it is prolific on the Internet. Hate speech takes various forms, from words advocating violence to those creating a climate of hate towards vulnerable groups. Cumulatively, hate speech creates an environment of hate and prejudice that legitimizes violence against its targets."
The coalition has asked the agency to request public comments on hate speech in the media, inquire into its extent, explore "the relationship between hate speech in the media and hate crimes," and look into options "for counteracting or reducing the negati... (more) |
Who's in Charge of Your Life -- You or the Government?
posted 06/01/2010, 6:21 PM (Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr.) [Category: Commentary] It seems incredible that in the last days, a fundamental right of the whole of humanity, the freedom of association, has been denounced by the New York Times and all major opinion sources, even as a national political figure was reluctant to defend his own statements in favor of the idea, and then distanced himself from the notion. Has such a fundamental principle of liberty become unsayable?
Or perhaps it is not so incredible. An overweening government, in an ... (more) |
Memorial Day, for a father whose son was killed in Iraq
posted 06/01/2010, 6:21 PM (Los Angeles Times) [Category: Commentary] To many, it's the start of summer or a day off from work. But as American wars come and go, more families experience Memorial Day in a deeper and more tragic way.
Where I grew up in the Midwest during the 1950s and early '60s, Memorial Day was no more about remembering the nation's war dead than Labor Day was about honoring working stiffs. It was a "free day." Falling on a Monday, Memorial Day made possible that great innovation, "the long weekend." As a family, we gathered in bac... (more) |
The Government Is Not the Country
posted 06/01/2010, 6:21 PM (Jacob G. Hornberger) [Category: Commentary] One of the bromides we hear every Memorial Day is how countless American soldiers have died for their country. That’s nothing but sheer nonsense. Many of them died not for their country but rather for their government. There’s a difference.
Unfortunately, many Americans conflate the government and the country. In their minds, they are one and the same thing. Thus, for them when soldiers die for their government, they also die for their country.
By the same token... (more) |
All the News That the Government Sees Fit to Print
posted 06/01/2010, 6:20 PM (David Kramer) [Category: Commentary] Michigan lawmaker Bruce Patterson wants to license news reporters. LICENSE NEWS REPORTERS!!! Why? Because the lawmaker wants to insure “quality” (Whose subjective standard of quality, may I ask, Mr. Patterson?) like the government does with hairdressers (Gee, I just got a lousy $20 haircut from an unlicensed hairdresser. I guess this calls for a multi-million dollar lawsuit--or I perhap... (more) |
Suspect flu vaccine to remain in use
posted 06/01/2010, 6:20 PM (The Age) [Category: Brave New World] AUSTRALIAN-MADE flu vaccine Fluvax, found to trigger a nine times higher than expected rate of convulsions in babies, will remain available for use but subject to precautionary measures.

Despite investigations over the past month, experts hav... (more) |
Are Cameras the New Guns?
posted 06/01/2010, 6:20 PM (Wendy McElroy) [Category: Commentary]
In response to a flood of Facebook and YouTube videos that depict police abuse, a new trend in law enforcement is gaining popularity. In at least three states (Illinois, Massachusetts, and Maryland), it is now illegal to record an on-duty police officer even if the encounter involves you and may be necessary to your defense, and even if the recording is on a public street where no expectation of privacy exists.
The legal justification for arresting the “shooter” rests on existing ... (more) |
New Mexico Cops Use Helicopters to Bust Teenage Parties
posted 06/01/2010, 6:19 PM (KRQE) [Category: Tyranny/Police State] The second weekend of the Bernalillo County Sheriff Department’s new Party Patrol was fruitful and the program could be extended.
BCSO is going all out by utilizing 16 deputies and the department’s helicopter to bust up underage parties.
Early Sunday morning, the patrol arrested Miguel Montiel, 44, and charged him with five felony counts of giving liquor to minors.
Deputies were called to a loud party in a South Valley neighborhood just after midnight... (more) |
Guarding Your Money from Government Onslaughts
posted 06/01/2010, 6:19 PM (Richard Daughty) [Category: Commentary] Grandfather-economic-report.com is famous for presenting whole constellations, in graphic form, of horrors about the mess that fiat money and government, in the hands of incompetent do-gooders, has allowed.
He writes that, in 2009, people worked, “3 times longer per year to pay all taxes more than they pay for food, housing and clothing combined.” Yikes!
This is where I learned that the combined onslaught of government (from local corruption to Congr... (more) |
