LAX Shooter 'Wanted To Kill TSA And Pigs' Says Anonymous Police Source posted 11/01/2013, 9:22 PM (InformationLiberation)
[Category: General]
From the Associated Press:
The FBI and Los Angeles Airport Police identified the gunman as Paul Ciancia, 23, of Pennsville, N.J. He had apparently been living in Los Angeles.

A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly, said Ciancia was wearing fatigues and carrying a bag containing a handwritten note that said he wanted to kill TSA employees and "pigs." The official said the rant refers to how Ciancia believed his constitutional rights were being violated by TSA searches and that he's a "pissed-off patriot" upset at former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

Ciancia had at least five full 30-round magazines on him, said the official, who was briefed at LAX on the investigation. The official said Ciancia was shot in the mouth and leg by two airport police officers.
From ABC News:
An eyewitness, Leon Saryan, told ABC News Radio that a "fairly young" gunman with a rifle came down a corridor in Terminal 3 and shot perhaps 20 times.

A TSA officer holding Saryan's shoes was shot and wounded, he told ABC.

Saryan said the gunman asked him, "Are you TSA?"

"He saw me. He looked at me with a quizzical look and said, 'TSA?' And I just shook my head. So he moved on," Saryan said.

LITTLE ROCK (CN) - A city cop in Arkansas chased a woman through her workplace, shooting a Taser at her, because she refused to show him her breasts, the woman claims in court.

Ashlea Bennett sued the City of Haskell, Ark. and its police Officer Brandon Carter, in Federal Court.

She claims Carter "demanded that she expose her breasts to him" after he entered her workplace while on duty and wearing his uniform.

"Carter's demands to th

The Virtue of Vigilantism posted 11/01/2013, 1:45 PM (Logan Albright)
[Category: Commentary]
Most of us are brought up believing that we live in a nation of laws, that certain objective rules govern society, and that enforcing those rules is the sole province of government and its agents. When we have a problem, we rely on the police and the courts to solve it, and whatever decisions they make are deemed final and binding. Horror stories about lynchings and mob justice instill an inherent fear of taking the law into our own hands. Leave it to the professionals, we are told. They will ta... (more)

A Steroid-Using Arlington Cop Has Pleaded Guilty to Tipping Off His Dealer posted 11/01/2013, 1:45 PM (Dallas Observer)
[Category: Tyranny/Police State]
The big surprise that emerged from this summer's arrest of Arlington police officer Thomas Kantzos wasn't that he'd been using steroids, nor that he'd once had them delivered to his squad car, nor that he repeatedly tipped off his dealer as a local drug task force was preparing to move in. It was that the Arlington PD described in the criminal complaint bore as much resemblance to a Major League clubhouse circa 1998 than it did to an agency charged with policing illegal drugs, performance-enhanc... Feinstein Releases Fake NSA Reform Bill, Actually Tries To Legalize Illegal NSA Bulk Data Collection posted 11/01/2013, 1:45 PM (Techdirt)
[Category: Big Brother/Orwellian]
Despite Dianne Feinstein's supposed "conversion" earlier this week about the NSA being out of control with its spying, and the associated performance of NSA folks claiming that they were screwed, it's quickly become apparent that this was all pure theater to make people think that real reform might be coming.

UK Government Funds Anti-Piracy Outfit With Taxpayer Money posted 11/01/2013, 1:45 PM (TorrentFreak)
[Category: Big Brother/Orwellian]
The UK Government’s Technology Strategy Board has awarded £250,000 to the London-based anti-piracy outfit MUSO. The company will use the public funding to develop one of their new anti-piracy tools, which it says will benefit rightsholders and the local tech industry. Interestingly, a quick look at MUSO’s clients shows that despite the public funding, the company’s most prominent customers are not based in the UK.

Glenn Greenwald: On leaving the Guardian posted 11/01/2013, 1:45 PM (Glenn Greenwald)
[Category: General]
As many of you know, I'm leaving the Guardian in order to work with Pierre Omidyar, Laura Poitras, Jeremy Scahill and soon-to-be-identified others on building a new media organization. As I said when this news was reported a couple of weeks ago, leaving the Guardian was not an easy choice, but this was a dream opportunity that was impossible to decline.
