Government Should Stop Its Own Violence First
posted 04/22/2013, 7:47 AM (Sheldon Richman)|
The horrific bombings at the Boston Marathon have left us all stunned. We still don't know the perpetrators' motive, but there are some things we do know.
The bombers chose the most closely monitored location in all of Boston. They could have chosen a different site, knowing that all eyes were on the marathon route. But no. They chose the finish line of the oldest marathon in America.
Let that sink in. Since 9/11, law-abiding Americans have been subjected to intrusi... (more)
US Supreme Court Strikes Down Warrantless DUI Blood Draw
posted 04/22/2013, 7:46 AM (TheNewspaper)|
America's top court does not want cops forcibly extracting blood from motorists without a warrant. The Supreme Court on Wednesday found Tyler McNeely's constitutional rights were violated when he was taken to a hospital for a blood draw after a Missouri state patrolman accused him of driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) in October 2010.... 7-Eleven robbery not related to Boston bombing suspects
posted 04/22/2013, 7:46 AM (USA Today)|
There was a 7-Eleven robbery in Cambridge last night, but it had nothing to do with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.
Margaret Chabris, the director of corporate communication at 7- Eleven, says the surveillance video of the crime was not taken at a 7-Eleven and that the suspect that did rob the 7-Eleven does not look like Tamerlan or Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
"The suspect in the photos for that particular 7-Eleven robbery looks nothing like the suspects," Chabris says... (more)
The Rodney Dangerfields of the Ideological Universe
posted 04/22/2013, 7:45 AM (Robert Higgs)|
Libertarian anarchists are the Rodney Dangerfields of the ideological universe. Born and reared in a world pervaded by the state and statism, we must fight our way through a dense jungle of clinging, collectivist vines, obscured by murky, mendacious propaganda, and populated by brainwashed lizards, political opportunists, and a multitude of wormy moochers. If we are hardy and continue to hack our way toward the light of truth, we ultimately grasp an understanding of the state in all its violent,... (more)
Japan Steps Into the Void
posted 04/22/2013, 7:45 AM (Peter Schiff)|
In the years following the global financial crisis, economists and investors have gotten very comfortable with very high, and seemingly persistent, government debt. The nonchalance may be underpinned by the assumption that globally significant countries that can print their own currencies can't get trapped in a sovereign debt crisis. However, it now appears that Japan is preparing to put this confidence to the ultimate stress test.
For the better part of 20 years, successive Japan... (more)

Bombing suspect spent Wednesday as typical student
posted 04/20/2013, 2:30 PM (Boston Globe)|
DARTMOUTH — Dzhokhar Tsarnaev spent an apparently normal day Wednesday at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where he was a sophomore, according to a school official, working out in the gym, then sleeping in his dorm room that night, while law enforcement officials frantically scanned photos trying to identify the men who planted deadly bombs at the Boston Marathon on Monday.
Card swipes told officials that Tsarnaev, described as a good and typical student who played intra... (more)

Boston Bombing Suspect's Miranda Warning Put On Hold For 'Public Safety Exception'

[Category: Tyranny/Police State]
Now that second Boston bombing suspect has been apprehended, there are still lots of unanswered questions swirling. One of them is whether or not he has been read his Miranda rights, which are designed to protect a suspect's Fifth and Sixth Amendment rights under the US Constitution. The answer as of this writing that the bombing suspect is not being read his rights. "There is a public safety exemption in cases of national security and potential charges involving acts of terrorism," said US Atto... (more)
Boston Bombing Victim in Iconic Photo Helped Identify Attackers
posted 04/19/2013, 5:08 AM (Bloomberg)|
Minutes before the bombs blew up in Boston, Jeff Bauman looked into the eyes of the man who tried to kill him.
Just before 3 p.m. on April 15, Bauman was waiting among the crowd for his girlfriend to cross the finish line at the Boston Marathon. A man wearing a cap, sunglasses and a black jacket over a hooded sweatshirt looked at Jeff, 27, and dropped a bag at his feet, his brother, Chris Bauman, said in an interview.
Two and a half minutes later, the bag exploded, ... (more)
FBI Blurs Agent's Face?
posted 04/19/2013, 5:07 AM (Infowars)|
In their rush to release video of potential suspects, the FBI may have tripped up in their editing.
The first camera angle shows a man on the right fiddling with his ear (possibly adjusting or inserting an earpiece?), however, in the following camera angle the man is blurred out.
Was the FBI too lazy or too sloppy to blur the first angle featuring one of their agents?

It would appear that Rep. Mike Rogers, the main person in Congress pushing for CISPA, has kept rather quiet about a very direct conflict of interest that calls into serious question the entire bill. It would appear that Rogers' wife stands to benefit quite a lot from the passage of CISPA, and has helped in the push to get the bill passed. It's somewhat amazing that no one has really covered this part of the story, but it highlights, yet again, the kind of activities by folks in Congress... (more)
The Company That Owns Your Genes

The Supreme Court — a politically appointed gang of black-robed lawyers — is soon going to decide on one of the most contentious issues in medical science: Can human genes be patented, and to what technologies can those patents be extended to cover?
The particular issue concerns one company, Myriad Genetics, and its claim to own the source code of two genes called BRCA1 and BRCA2, which, when mutated, are related to breast and ovarian cancer. If anyone else tries to test for this ... (more)

One of the more curious revelations of the New Normal is the fundamental dichotomy when investing between paper "investors", or those who chase returns based on intangible, fiat-based and central bank-backed promises, such as capital appreciation or cash flow streams, and those who would rather convert their paper money into hard assets, even if said assets can not be, in the immortal words of Warren Buffett, fondled, or otherwise generate a cash-based return. Such as gold. ... (more)
