"The only thing stopping the hallway of dedicated officers from entering room 111 and 112 was the on-scene commander who decided to place the lives of officers before the lives of children."
McCraw said the commander, who he identified as Uvalde school district Police Chief Pete Arredondo, had officers waiting for a key "that was never needed" because the door had a "dysfunctional" strike plate and was therefor likely never secured. ![]() "I don't believe, based on the information that we have right now, that that [classroom] door was ever secured," McCraw said.
