Surveillance cameras are making their way into local schools. Last month, more than 18 cameras were installed in Owosso public schools, and the technology is helping officials keep a closer eye on what's going on inside their district.

Surveillance cameras have been placed at points of entry and other locations in Owosso schools, and it's technology helping create a safer environment for students and facility. Owosso public school official Dan Hock says the main purpose of the cameras is to keep track of who's going in and out of the school, but their presence also affects the way the students act.

Dan Hock, Director of Operations, Owosso Schools: "The fact that security cameras are in place is a deterrent in and of itself, because people are aware of their presence and their use."

Five cameras were installed about a month ago in Owosso High School. One of them is in the media center. Officials say it prevents students from messing around with the equipment. Janell Perkins keeps an eye what goes on in the media center. Just by logging onto the internet, she can see what students on the other side of the room are doing. She says that's caused a big change in the way students behave.

Janell Perkins, Owosso HS: "Keeping them on computer sites they should be on so they're not on ESPN or chatting."

So far, officials say the cameras have been a success, and in the future, more cameras could be put into the district's schools.
