The Compassion Of the State: Town Sells Mom's Home At Auction Over Unpaid $95 Tax Bill She Was Never Notified About

A woman from Georgia is pleading with council officials to be allowed to keep her home after it was foreclosed on and sold at auction - all because of an unpaid tax bill of $94.85.

Xui Lui from the town of Norcross says not only was she unaware that her condo had been sold auction, she also claims she never received any communication from authorities telling her about the sale in the first place.

Now, council officials are preparing to evict her by Thanksgiving.

Ms. Lui says she never knew there was an overdue tax bill on her place because the notices were all returned to city hall because of a clerical error.

Town officials say they may try to fix the situation, we will see if anything comes of it.

The same cannot be said for the city of Kalamazoo, Michigan where an elderly car crash victim in the same situation who says she was not notified of her failure to pay a $2,000 property tax ransom on her home just had it stolen by the local government, a judge ruled on the case saying the notices sent to her "were reasonably calculated to apprise her of the foreclosure proceedings," therefore the city has the "right" to steal it.

The city is due to sell the home at an $80,000 profit, miscommunications and media scrutiny be damned.
