Woman Walking On "Wrong Side Of The Street" Tackled & Arrested For Not Submitting To Cop

From CBS 19:
A Whitehouse woman claims she was unfairly arrested for failing to stop for a police officer. She says the cop was acting suspicious and she felt threatened, but police officials say she handled it the wrong way.

Melissa Bonnette says she was on her usual morning walk around 9:45 a.m. Friday when a man in uniform on a motorcycle pulled up next to her, asking if she lived in the area and if he could speak to her.

"I thought that maybe he was flirting," she said. "I just thought it was odd, I thought it was odd. I wasn't really sure but I felt uncomfortable because there wasn't anyone around."

She says she was worried he might not even a real cop, so she refused to stop and began jogging away from him.

"He just crept along beside me on his motorcycle and he started saying, 'Hey ma'am! I want to talk to you. Hey stop, ma'am! I want to talk to you.' Then my anxiety rose even higher," she said.

"The motorcycle has a patch on both sides of the gas tank. It's black and white and says 'Whitehouse Police,' and has red and blue lights on it," Whitehouse Police Chief Craig Shelton said. "So you have to take it for what it is. Do you think he's a Whitehouse police officer? Why would you think he's someone impersonating a police officer?"

That's when Bonnette says he got off his bike, chased her down, tackled her and threw her in handcuffs.

99228 Walking on the wrong side of the road? On a suburban street. That's it? She must be a career-criminal. Obviously a terrorist. I feel safer now.
Cop-group think, Stop resisting. Should have called in a swat team to help maintain public safety. Where are the snipers when you need them.

19919 The answer to America's problems is to hire 50 million more goons as federal, state and city cops.
This will reduce unemployment and increase tax revenues.
By having each goon cop issue only five citations daily, they would also make a lot of money for government.and reduce deficits.

71178 The cop was flirting with her, and was embarrassed and angry when she rejected him. Well, he wanted to get his hands on her, and he did.

There are those animals who dress like cops and invest in the equipment to pull off the con. So how can you tell the difference? A real cop will act lawfully. This woman was not damaging property, injuring anyone, or creating a disturbance. An honest cop performing his duty properly would have no reason to molest this woman.

The woman acted in accordance with police policy for citizens who have reason to believe they are dealing with an impostor. In any event, their is in equality here. If a citizen "feels threatened" they can neither stand nor withdraw. If a "cop" feels threatened, he can kill. Guess we all are second class citizens now, or whatever you call serfs.

68255 Contrary to (seemingly) everyone else, I don't see anything wrong in what the cop did.

First of all, it would be useful for the journalist writing about the cops to at least find out the difference between detention and arrest. From the description, it was detention 100%. Melissa was was not taken to the station, she was not charged with anything, so it was not arrest. Handcuffing is allowed during detention, and it looks like in this case it was justified because she resisted. Certainly, we all know that in many other cases encounter like this would result in charge with resisting arrest, or not assault on officer, but not in this case.

Second, it looks like the cop did have enough reasons to detain her because she did violate the ordinance. Since it was very minor infraction, he tried to do it peacefully, but she refused. At this point the cop either had to let her go, or detain her. He detained. Whether the cop made it clear to her that it's detention, is not obvious - since the woman obviously sees herself first of all as highly desired sexual object and can't imagine LE having any other interest in her, maybe she overheard that nuance.

10842 A "Whitehouse women," was unable to recognize a "Whitehouse Police" officer? That doesn't make much sense. He even had patches on BOTH SIDES of his gas tank! (mirror-mirror)

This article speaks to the intellect of "Whitehouse" emPloyees.

98238 Excessive force; abuse of authority; battery; intentional infliction of emotional distress; loss of consortium (if applicable) and . . .

I hope she sues the bastards; individually and collectively. Bureaucrats understand the language of money. The motor unit cop should be fired. His decision-making capabilities are obviously impaired by his hubris and God complex.

Good riddance to bad cop rubbish.

9974 Remind me never to set foot in Whitehouse, TX. Buy gas, food, motel or any services. A bunch of losers. What is sad is this affects the city as a whole. Commerce, economy, and its people. Also, my Daughter goes to UT in Tyler.

184187 "Contempt of cop."

It's this sort of attitude that completely undermines law enforcement in this country. If these cops had any kind of brains then they would realize that their authority is fast slipping through their fingers as citizens grown weary of their nonsense and become less compliant as a result.

When a country begins behaving lawlessly abroad and at home, how does it end?

Well, how it ended for Germany in WW2 can give us a hint: the country was leveled to the last blade of grass by carpet bombing, until tyranny was finally overthrown and order restored.

I hope we don't get to that point in America.

7150 When are people going to learn that 99 times out of a hundred they have never broken a law. The only thing that this woman allegedly could be charged with is a STATUTE violation. She will lose if she lets them have jurisdiction over her. A few things she can do is check his oath of office, if it is filed properly. File a complaint of acting under color of law if it is not recorded. Impeading her travel, assault, & battery. I f they took her to jail it would be false arrest, detainment, and kidnapping. Theses
are just a few

20854 What bothers me about this news, motor cycle police nationwide are now the duck in the shooting gallery at the carnaval called JUSTICE.

"WATCH FOR MOTOR CYCLES" bumper stickers is now a WARNING.
"And shove em into guard-rail"

Some years ago, Rockford TN 37853, had to abandon their police force to Blount County police department because one of their officers was forcing bikes off the road and into guard rails. If my memory serves me correctly a new crusier with different equipment told on the officer thus causing the review of past motorcycle deaths and the cop.

23243 Police cannot initiate contact without “reasonable suspicion.” He should have told her what that “reasonable suspicion was simply by telling her WHY he wanted to detain her. He if would have said something like, “Mam, you are walking on the wrong side of the road in violation of city ordinance. Please stop so I can issue you a citation or a warning.” None of this would have happened.

67248 Give me a fricking break! Really....Walking on the wrong side of the road?? Really....In that bedroom town!
Not like she was walking on a major highway, or even a major street. She was in her neighborhood.
I like how this chief or whatever, really tried to tell the reporter with a straight face that his officer was doing the right thing. Hahahaha
That will teach the puny little ant to resist.
Hope she wins a major settlement and the cop fired. He should have just kept driving looking for his next victim.
