Innocent Citizens Held At Gunpoint In Terrifying California Checkpoints

ROSEVILLE, CA ĖInnocent citizens traveling down public streets had a terrifying experience when they were forced through a warrantless government checkpoint in which armed men pointed guns at their heads while they proved their innocence.† Police were looking for a suspect in a recent shooting and were using the opportunity to roll out aggressive checkpoints.

The area had been put into lockdown while police looked for a shooting suspect on Friday afternoon.

A federal agent patrolling the streets of Roseville on October 25th recognized a suspect on a bicycle as†Samuel Nathan Duran, 32, a wanted parole violator.† Duran fled and led officers on a chase, where Duran shot one officer, jumping a fence, and temporarily evaded police.

Police used the opportunity to lock down the area.† Roadblocks were set up.† Schools went into lockdown.† Helicopters whirred overhead.† Police forced at least 15 homes to evacuate and roadblocked the streets.

While Roseville police deployed SWAT and pointed rifles at innocent drivers, Sammy Duran had holed up in a nearby house.† The inhabitants of that house escaped, and Duran proceeded to hold out in that house for several hours before ultimately surrendering hours later.

The manhunt was reminiscent of what was seen in the Los Angeles area earlier this year, where police sought an ex-cop named Christopher Dorner.† During that manhunt, police shot up 3 innocent people in separate incidents, misidentifying their targetsí identity, gender, vehicle, and race.

Police show particular ferocity during manhunts involving one of their own was wounded by the suspect.

Duran was a dangerous suspect and wounded several officers in his apprehension.† But danger is not a valid reason to treat innocent people like criminals and force them look down the barrel of a rifle while driving down a public street.

Duran was a Hispanic suspect with a shaved head.† Clearly the motorist being threatened at the checkpoint in the photo above did not match Duranís description.† California Highway Patrol had no reason to stop him and certainly no reason to point their rifles at him.† It is grossly negligent to point a rifle at anything you arenít willing to destroy.

At any given time there are numerous wanted criminals on the loose all over the country.† We must ensure that our rights arenít discarded just because of fear and danger.

10864 why don't you go out and put your life at risk for the public when a known felon is on the loose shooting at cops?

"Duran was a dangerous suspect and wounded several officers in his apprehension"

Give me a break. Police officers are always in danger. I don't blame these officers for overreacting when other officers were shot that day. Give me a break. I understand your point, Chris, but trust me, you don't want a world without police. And they do protect us from harm most of the time.

75166 "it is grossly negligent to point a rifle at anything you aren't willing to destroy" Thats the point, cops feel they are at war with citizens and so they feel they are willing to destroy us at any time.

7614 Hopefully, the guy was not just staring; he was memorizing the name on the uniform for later reference. The cop should be fired for pointing that weapon the was he is shown. He will be one of the first to be purged.

17444 California is a state Josef Stalin would love. Police are never in danger and if they are they put themselves in that predicament. If Police cared so much about our safety they would not make it hard for average Joes to get a gun.

California needs lots of police for people are shaking off the programming at god-speed. A gun is a finite object, so, when people stop believing in such archaic things as "government," (especially, this redundant government), the government is then forced to deploy a "real" threat ie. "guns," and, Mad Men to point those guns.

What truly caught my eye when i read this headline, was the capitalization of words, which would usually be left in lower-case. i then set about to find the rules on 'writing headlines,' and, indeed, i did find them. only, the headline above doesn't follow the standard headline protocol, however, it does comply with the model: "writing rules for linear functions." that's odd... or, perhaps it's not....

20458 I did notice the officer didnt have his finger on the trigger and was very blatant about holding it away from the trigger so it would be plainly visible. I agree it would be intimidating and scary being held at gunpoint, but this was a fugitive who was plainly very willing to engage in a firefight at any moment with law enforcement and you would assume this is a fugitive more than willing to use civilians as a shield and lay in a back seat as well. I do agree there are times when more officer training is required and their tactics can be over the top and heavy handed. Your sight is brilliant at pointing out these fiascos of fascism that occur almost daily in this country of ours. I am just not feeling this is one of them.

1848 Ok I spent 27 years in law enforcement and that officer should have had that weapon at we called "indoor ready " with it at shoulder pointing toward the ground, but even so I think that was extreme . Our country is headed for a civil war that will far exceed the last one we had in the 1860's, load up and stock up!

17799 It isn't as if any rational person still believes the USA is a free country. Think about it. No-warrant wire taps, indefinite detention of citizens without charges, approval of rendition of prisoners and torture, stop and frisk without probable cause, search and seizure without a warrant, no-knock entry, confiscation and destruction of cameras that might have been used to film police acting illegally, police brutality, police shootings that go without investigation, managed news, and the civil-rights destroying "Patriot" Act.

Acts of police behaving illegally, with shootings, tasers, and unwarranted violence now appear almost daily. Rarely are these offenses punished. Most often "an investigation" is claimed, but soon forgotten

In addition, the USA, with 5% of the world population, has 25% of all of the prisoners in the world. That means the USA has the most people in prison of any nation in history. Even by percentage of residents incarcerated, not just sheer numbers. USA is # 1
. Does any of that sound like a free country?

As Dwight D. Eisenhower said about communism, "It's like slicing sausage. First they out off a small slice. That isn't worth fighting over. Then they take another small slice that isn't worth fighting over. Then another and another. Finally, all you have left is the string and that isn't worth fighting over, either.

107216 I is impossible for an officer to serve in any police force and remain honest..
1848 is correct that a time of extreme peril will come to America.

17428 In case you haven't noticed, we don't have any rights anymore. They are turning this country into a military police state as fast as they can. Cops carry machine guns with black or camo military uniforms and now they have tanks and other equipment that is used in war, thanks to the defense department that gives this stuff to them after one of our fake wars to establish police states all over the world. Any country where the police are allowed to do this is a police state. Get over this thing about us having rights!
