State Seeks to Shut Down Rental Car Co. Run by Teenagers For Undercutting Hertz, Avis

The idea was this: At every major airport, acres of cars sit idle, left parked by owners who have jetted off. Why couldn't these same cars be rented to arriving travelers? Rates could be dramatically cheaper than those charged by traditional car rental companies, since, under this model, the rental company wouldn't have to pay for or maintain the fleet.

678 Now without government, this would all be so much better: Avis or Hertz would simply send around a few thugs to say, "Stop. Or else!" Or maybe burn down their office some dark night.

Damn the government for requiring them be civil and sue to protect their monopoly.

Um... all that happened in this case is Avis and Hertz sent a few thugs to say 'stop or else', said thugs have a total monopoly on violence and resisting them will get you murdered or imprisoned.

Your analogy is giving the thugs ultimate power then expecting them to use it responsibly.

7147 @Chris - What gets my goat is: "All this would be so much better without a government." No, it won't.

Because thugs is thugs. Just ask the two 320 pound thugs breaking your bones while their four 280 pound buddies stand by with guns to make sure you're outnumbered in case you're into self defense. All hired by your competitor to make certain you STOP COMPETING.

Somehow I doubt if you'll see much difference between Public-Service-Thugs and Thugs-for-Hire.

The problem is people who think competition is bad; and those exist whether there's a government or not.

1038 Without government, companies would be monopolies only if consumers allowed them to be. Without government, people would be allowed to have other options.
