Sources: NSA sucks in data from 50 companies

Analysts at the National Security Agency can now secretly access real-time user data provided by as many as 50 American companies, ranging from credit rating agencies to internet service providers, two government officials familiar with the arrangements said.

Several of the companies have provided records continuously since 2006, while others have given the agency sporadic access, these officials said. These officials disclosed the number of participating companies in order to provide context for a series of disclosures about the NSA's domestic collection policies. The officials, contacted independently, repeatedly said that "domestic collection" does not mean that the target is based in the U.S. or is a U.S. citizen; rather, it refers only to the origin of the data.

678 I have no idea why this is a surprise to anyone. I concluded a decade ago that NSA records everything, subject only to feasibility limitations.

Right now, I'm assuming they record all phone calls, all financial transactions, all emails, all web requests/pages, all medical encounters, all political relationships/encounters, the contents of all letters, and everyone's physical location from the GPS in cell phones. They may even be recording all video cameras, though my current estimate says that's not feasible until 2015.

They're definitely recording this comment.

Anyone who naively thought otherwise hasn't been paying attention: That was the whole point of Total Information Awareness. Anyone who thought that program went away just because of a little controversy, is a moron.
