Medicare Is Doomed

by Sheldon Richman

When Democrats accuse Republicans of wanting to “end Medicare as we know it,” they are right. Of course ending Medicare as we know it is not the same as ending Medicare. What Democrats fail to point out is that “Medicare as we know it” is no longer an option for anyone. They too will end “Medicare as we know it.” If no changes are made in the program, it will simply collapse.

7585 When I see medicare, social security and entitlements coupled together like this I just have to roll my eyes.

This guy is wrong on many levels, but it's easy to see his bias comes from his initial hatred of the idea of medicare to begin with, which is that to help those in need most we need everyone to chip in. There are a group of people who feel the majority of the country's problems started with the creation of the social safety nets.

First I'd start with his line that medicare has "tens of trillions of unfunded liabilities". This is just an outright lie, or at best a half truth put out to confuse the masses involving projections +100 years down the line, it's not surprising he does nothing to cite a source for this statistic.

Next on the baby boomer front, sure many are turning 65 each day however the majority of them cannot afford to take their SS out until after their 66th birthday due to their need to continue working to make enough money to survive. With the cost of living rapidly increasing and the COLA benefit retirees rely on to live staying relatively the same seniors cant afford to stop working and retire at 65.

What this guy truly misses is the entire point of medicare. Instead of looking at it like a sociopath who gets upset that others are getting something "for free" that's paid for "on his dime", you need to realize that these people will be getting medical care regardless of medicare's existence. Without Medicare those same seniors would be bankrupt(and likely crushing their siblings savings), as well as burdening the entire medical system with unpaid bills. When someone can't afford a emergency procedure it still happens, and we as taxpayers all pay much more for it than we would if they were covered under Medicare.

What we need to focus on is the removal of corruption and greed from all aspects of government, Medicare included, so we that we can continue to provide a social safety net for the least fortunate.
