What If We Had To Vote On The Food We Bought At The Grocery Store?Chris | InformationLiberation

Imagine if people voted on what groceries to buy. Rather than go to the store and pick out what you specifically want, everyone in the United States decided every four years in massive elections what food everyone will be forced to buy. What would we be forced to fill our cart with? Doritos, sodas, kool-aid, cookies, ice cream, and all sorts of other popular cheap garbage.
Let's say you want to eat healthy organic produce, well, tough luck. You don't like it? You just need to convince everyone else to vote for the diet you want to eat! Simple, right? You can change the law, just lobby your friends and family, start a political campaign, get donations and run ads all over TV, you'll have your chance to change the system every four years! In the meantime, you'll have to eat the cheap garbage, after all, not to do so would be unpatriotic and unamerican!
How many people would want to switch to such a system? Even someone who liked only the most popular foods would still be against such a system, as their tastes can change and they want the freedom to buy what they want, when they want it.
Free markets give us the ability to buy what we want, when we want, regardless of what other people want. If someone wants to eat cheap garbage, that's their prerogative, and if you want to eat healthy food that's your choice. Everyone gets what they want, and everyone wins. Yet in "democracy" we don't organize society in this voluntary way, you have to live under the ruler chosen by everyone else. Oh, you want to be free? You don't want to be ruled over by some stranger like Mitt Romney or Barack Obama? Sorry, you don't get that choice, the people have spoken!
Democracy as a system is terrible, it marginalizes everyone but the "mass idiot," a.k.a. the "average American." If we abolished this voting scheme, and simply let people voluntarily decide what services they wanted to be provided for them through the free market, just as they do with their groceries, everyone could get what they want, and everyone would win. Of course, the parasites who live off exploiting others would be out of luck, but that's a good thing.
