Man Sentenced to 30 Days for Catching Rain Water on Own Property Enters Jail

Gary Harrington, the Oregon man convicted of collecting rainwater and snow runoff on his rural property surrendered Wednesday morning to begin serving his 30-day, jail sentence in Medford, Ore.

“I’m sacrificing my liberty so we can stand up as a country and stand for our liberty,” Harrington told a small crowd of people gathered outside of the Jackson County (Ore.) Jail.

Several people held signs that showed support for Harrington as he was taken inside the jail.

Harrington was found guilty two weeks ago of breaking a 1925 law for having, what state water managers called “three illegal reservoirs” on his property. He was convicted of nine misdemeanors, sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined over $1500 for collecting rainwater and snow runoff on his property.

7088 and if you lived down stream or hill from him and his collection of rain water and runoff impeded your ability to live you wouldnt have a problem with this law.. Its the reason it is on on the books to protect the water table.

1744 @7088; This is actually definitely not the case, especially for the amounts given (3 water barrels). Maybe if he'd been collecting a majority of his property's rainwater for a number of years, and not using it? I don't actually know how long it would take. Long enough that we'd be hearing about it in his grandchildren's times, not ours.

And this is not to be confused with a "Tyrannical Act of Government", either, though it's their hands that get dirty enforcing unconstitutional laws.

This is most likely work of lobbyists and corporate sympathizers from as early as the 1800's (water disputes and rights are a heavy, burdensome beast), setting up companies and buying lawmakers in ways that stop people from being self sufficient - and therefore stop people from 'stealing' their profits.

After all, why should hydro companies step their services up when they can just make it illegal for you to collect water any other way?

Just look at Russia's history, if you want a great example on "how to remove personal power from the equation."

6846 @christrawr It's not 3 water barrels other articles listed "on his 170-acre property on Crowfoot Road in rural Eagle Point that hold roughly 13 million gallons of rainwater and snow runoff." That would be significant enough to affect water tables and other residents
