71230 Voting to have the government give poor people money IS compassion. Yes, your vote can make a world of difference to these people in need. That really is ALL it takes!

Of course going to the next level is doing work yourself to help people out. But local charities you volunteer at only reach so far. They can't help everyone. It's up to the government to do that.

7631 The fact that those who want all of us to pay more taxes REFUSE to pay any more than the minimum in income taxes (whenever they pay even that) gives the lie to their claims of wanting to help others. The government only requires that you pay the minimum, after that you can pay as much as you want.

Until Liberals begin paying 80% of their own personal income without a law that forces them to do so, I will have zero respect or interest in their continued attempts to take from those of us who work and give it to the government to waste.

20887 "If he wants a true Libertarian paradise he should live in Haiti. He's just another person who can't handle the gray areas of life. Third world countries have very weak non-centralized government, the majority are disenfranchised with no public schooling, no support systems to help them get out of poverty, terrible infrastructure, poor health standards, and no strong businesses. There you go, Libertarians, now please try to think your ideas all the way through before you go trying to change the world (which used to be a Libertarian's wet dream, but ask yourself why we worked so hard to get away from it). "

Hey moron.... how about Switzerland. Sensible drug policy, non-interventionist foreign policy. Decentralized government. Low taxes. Local school administration

Wealthiest country in the world (GDP/capita)
3.2% unemployment
Lowest taxes of a developed nation

And Haiti in no way exemplifies ANY libertarian ideals.

But hey why bother with reality.

4948 I know 3 very wealthy people. The one trait they share is they have no compassion for anyone. They all show up at charities and play the game but wouldn't be there if they didn't have to be. Penn is quite pompous and thinks because he has money he knows what to do.

63155 I am sure the Walton family gets it. The six remaining family members, have a fortune equal to the combined wealth of the bottom 30 percent of the American population 100 million people. And they spend that fortune, in part, influencing our politics, dropping $7.8 million on lobbying in 2011 alone. Trade policy has been a focus of that lobbying; Wal-Mart was a force behind the push for NAFTA in the '90s, behind pushes for corporate tax cuts and against paid sick days, and many more pro-corporate, anti-worker decisions that have shaped the conditions under which American workers labor today.

In the mean time Walmart employees line up for food stamps.

118209 I get it ! Brilliant!
Only help people less fortunate than you when it makes you feel good about yourself.
If you're not feeling 'holier than thou" then stop immediately.
And dont complain massed hordes; it's all about me you see, not you & your stupid poverty.

98114 I disagree. Sometimes morality requires intervention. Let's face it, those who wield the greatest amount of money and power (who have the greatest capacity to help) are not necessarily the most compassionate people. Through our votes, and our voice as a people, we can stand up against that injustice and ensure that everyone has a right to met their basic needs and lead a good life.

6665 I completely disagree with Mr. Penn, but I'm heartened by the great response to his comments. I'm one who believes medical care, education and energy should be free for all Americans. Think about it. Free energy is an absolute possibility if the people who control the current form of energy, 'fossil fuels' didn't want to lose their power over the rest of us so they block new technologies. If you don't believe me, google 'alternative energy' and see what's out there. You will find amazing things, and also many stories of suppression. I've seen a list of people who invented pollution free, free energy who died before research or patents could be approved. It's a big list.

18677 How 'bout this 1 off their taxes for every $10,000 they give to help the poor and tax 90% on everything over $96,000. If you've got a better proposal put up or shut up.

99188 It's been my observations that people who have lots of money live so far from the reality of being poor and having nothing they don't have a clue. Even if you have a job at the minimum wage you still cannot eat well, much less being able to go anywhere or do anything but exist. I know one percent of the worlds people have all the money and if they would just start spending things would get a lot better. The rich never seem to get enough money while the poor stay poor. Stand up for the poor and feeble minded.

205209 If by "gets it," you mean, "is a self-centered, heartless POS," I think you're on the right track. The point of wealth redistribution is to prevent capitalists from hoarding the wealth that the working class created; it's perfectly just to do this, although changing property laws would be much more to the point. Though I guess you're one of those who believes that capitalist property rights are somehow part of the periodic table or something.

172220 i think that the rich mostly deserve what they got. the majority of them worked hard for what they got.the real problem is that some heartless people(rich mosty) and connected have hijacted the government and its a goverment for the corporations and not the people.what are we going to do about it? i think we have smart people that can change it,but we have to do it in mass. we have to wake up. if enough people stand up we have a chance to do it. i mean millions and millions of people.like Gandi but a little hardder.yes angry and determined but no violence.
