Husker Fans Being Monitored By Cameras: Memorial Stadium Security Includes 200-Camera System

University of Nebraska officials are reminding Husker fans of Memorial Stadium's security measures a week after an incident in Norman, Okla., when a University of Oklahoma student killed himself with explosives Saturday outside the school's packed football stadium.

On Friday, KETV NewsWatch 7 got a look at the latest high-tech ways police are keeping fans safe. More than 200 cameras on campus are all able to be accessed using one mouse.

"We've incorporated a lot of different cameras into one system," said UNL’s Carl Oestman. "In fact, they're recorded at all times."

On game days, security can monitor inside and out of Memorial Stadium, look for suspicious activity, or help coordinate traffic. Another mapping screen can pinpoint specific spots in the stadium, which has been used many times in medical emergencies.

"It's not just what occurred down in Norman, Okla. Yes, we've thought about it, and yes, we've put some procedures in place, but it also deals with whatever happens," Oestman said.

Oestman said it's not a way to keep big brother watching, but rather, a way for fans to keep enjoying the Big Red experience.

"It's a way of giving that sense of security to fans," Oestman said.

Earlier this year federal officials visited Memorial Stadium and took back several suggestions to share with other college and pro teams.

In addition to the cameras, regular security measures will greet fans at the gates, including searches of bags and purses, and a request to look inside bulky coats.
